So was I. But only for about a minute. You were in the River City Railmen from Omaha Nebraska.

No, The Sky Ryders from Hutchinson Kansas. 1984 and 1986. Chad was in it for many years. He was in the snare line, I was in Quints. SR folded in 1993 or 94. 1986 we beat Phantom Regiment. We placed 9th at finals in Madison. Did the entire movie "Wizard of Oz" on the feild.

Almost without fail there are drummers who say they are ambidextrous. Those guys are generally assholes. Just cuz you can spank it with your left hand does not mean that you are ambidextrous.

Simon Phillips (good friend of mine) is true ambidextrous. Although I am going to ask him soon. He writes with his left hand but plays with both.

Speaking of DCI
Have you seen The Cadets (Champs)from last year?
I'm excited to be getting "The Lot".
Brings back memories!

I liked the "singing" of the drum solo section, even though I am opposed to amplifiers on the field. They did it really well, though.

Hey everyone. Thought I'd toss my comments in here. I used to play professionally (locally in small-fry bands around the Albuquerque area) until I wrecked my wrists and had to have surgery. I play keys now... but only for my own entertainment. Havn't been on stage in at least 10 years :(
Anyway, when I did play, all the way back to the early days, I always used matched grip no matter what style of music I was doing. It's always been most comfortable to me and I seem to be able to control the dynamics and all that best using the matched grip. I have tried to play with the traditional grip, but wasn't ever comfortable with it and could only jerk out the simplest 4/4 grooves with that grip.
Funny thing: My favorite drummer, Carl Palmer (the dude that inspired me to pick up a pair of sticks in the first place) said in a video "drum lesson" I found accidentally on WinMX once that he perferred the matched grip, but when he stopped talking and started playing, he used traditional grip. He also used traditional grip on the Cal-Jam 1974 video I also DLed from WinMX. The entire Karn Evil 9 1st Impression performance(including the solo), he was using traditional grip. He also was still using traditional in the 1978 Works Montreal show video. So what he said and how he actually played in all the times I've seen him contradicts one another. Whatever... Carl is still the man as far as I'm concerned.

when I see a dude with a pair of 2-b's and a pants leg rolled up I usually go ahead and take a BC powder.

I used to only play matched grip, but after taking about 3 years off from playing I started with the traditional grip. Matched is still a little more comfortable in regards to speed around the kit for me (think early Dave Weckl recording customs setup), but I find that the trad grip gives me more options in the long run.

For jazz, I play only trad, for rock I'll switch back & forth as needed in the middle of songs or whatever. If I can get my chops up with trad to the level they're at with matched grip, no doubt I would play exclusively with traditional grip.

If I had to make a decision I'd say with practice speed and heavy hitting are not an issue playing traditional grip. Dave Weckl & Vinnie both play trad, and I've seen Steve Gadd play traditional grip in both jazz and rock gigs. Not to mention other great drummers that I know I've left out here.

That being said, the traditional grip also offers more options, one example being ghosted notes on the snare. Just a flick of a couple of fingers gives complete control over nice strokes that can be tricky playing with the matched grip without relying on the wrist (i.e. more effort) to compensate. After playing 14 years or so matched, I can still see how effortless traditional grip is in the long run compared to matched.

As for the "looking cool" factor. Watch some Buddy Rich or Gene Krupa and tell me that ain't cool! If I see a rock or even a metal drummer playing traditional grip, I think THAT is cool shit! I don't know why, but to me it shows a different level of attention to details in technique, musicianship, and love for the craft and instrument. Don't decide on which grip to play because something "looks cool"......pick your poison, learn it to the best of your ability, and school everyone with your chops!

I was started off playing traditional/side grip & then learned two fist/matched grip & when I was about 15 I saw Jimi Hendrix's drummer on a video & he played his snare traditional & flipped to matched for the tom work

If I have to compete with 15million cab guitar & bass rigs with a magaphone then I take out big sticks & play matched all the way

For the record I play guitar & bass as well so standard drummer jokes don't apply lol

i like to play traditional on the hi hat but then switch it to matched all the other times. But I'm not really much of a drummer.

I just use the 2 fists method. Because like pretty much none today is raised on the traditional.

I may have! I ran into alot of tall hairy guitarists, mostly while drinking at the Now Voyager in Burbank or at Cherokee's off of Sunset Blvd, including the guys from Leatherwolf. I opened the door to the rehearsal place once and met face to face with Stephen Pearcy of RATT. Man he's a short guy!

What band was Robin in? His name is really familiar.

Hey Phil!

You want to know what's a trip?!?!

Robin Graves saw this posting - and E-mailed me yesterday! I've been trying to find him for years. That is freaking awesome!

That's great!!!! Glad you guys can hook up!

It would still be interesting to know where he used to hang out and if i ever met him. That would have been a loooooong time ago.

Mick (my bassplayer) told me that wherever Leatherwolf practiced was where he hung out.

Man, I haven't been on in ages.
Well, since I haven't been able to record, and my drums are packed away, I've been spending extra time working on my voice. My Bass player has convinced me that I need to become our lead singer. So I've been pumping Iron, and burst a blood vessel in my right arm while curling 250lbs.
(don't try this at home kids.)
I've packed on about 30 lbs. of Muscle in the last two and a half months.

And, I........

.......met the Love of my Life!

She totally rocks, and is into the fact that I'm a musician....and she was like,"Honey - You're a rocker - let your hair grow back out!"

And so it shall be! LOL
