Which tom mic?

pint07

Oh hello
Alright, so I'm recording this song right now that has a lot of tom work in it. I'm not liking the tom sound I'm getting from just a few demo takes we recorded with a Audix fusion pack. Part of it is the actual drums need new heads, which we will deal with. The tom sound I'm looking for is something punchy but also full, i.e. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BJDNw7o6so ).

I'm going to be buying an Audix d6 in the next few weeks. I was thinking of going with a D1 or D2 for the tom and a D4 for the floor tom; but that's why i came here first.

Here's what I've got now (I know the drums aren't perfectly in time, I haven't gone through and picked out the good takes yet, this is just a really rough demo, so there's no reason to make it perfect yet).

Any advice would be great.

Tl;dr I need recommendations for tom mics that will suit what I'm looking for, as in the first link ^.

It's the tom more than the mic. If you want a really big booming tom sound you need big toms that are tuned correctly before anything else.
Of course it doesn't hurt to mic it with a mic with better low frequency response. Try a the d6 on the floor tom and compare it with some standard mic like a sm57. See if you get closer to the sound you want.

You'll probably notice that the difference in the sound you capture isn't that big a difference unless you have really deep sounding toms. Most toms 14 16 18 inches in diameter lie in a more low-mid range frequency than low frequency (like the kick, or bass guitar), but for a specific song in which you want a really deep sound you're probably gonna get it tuning the largest diameter tom you can find to a deep sound rather than finding the right mic to get you that deep sound.
