Which Sound Card

Read my earlier post. I have already explained to you why the Audigy2 EX has limitations for recording applications - it is not just about having 24/96 Asio drivers.

I will give you an example, I record nearly all my projects at 24bit 44.1khz. You cannot do that with Asio on an Audigy2 EX (ask creative if you can use ASIO at 24/44.1 or 16/44.1 or 24/48 on their cards).

All the other sound quality issues are valid (resampling to 48khz with mme/directsound drivers, poorer quality converters etc).

If you want to get an Audigy2 EX despite all the advice given to you, then go for it. We are only trying to help you choose the best soundcard for your buck. Just dont complain about these limitations later when you experience them when trying to record.

Best of luck in whatever you decide.

Thanx for all your help i will let you know which i will get and how good it will perform..........
I will write to Creative with some points that you mention and will let you know what they will replie.......
I want to be certain that the 2 EX is like the audigy 2
as i havnt tyet seen anyone comparing the 2 EX with other cards

See if you can find out whether they changed the ADC on the EX. I am sure the DACs are the same but not sure about the ADC. Sorry I forgot to look at the ADC when comparing the different Audigy2 models earlier. Hopefully Creative put in a better ADC on the EX (to justify the price difference).

ps: the ADC does not affect the issues I raised previously regarding the ASIO drivers, resampling and measured sound quality of the DACs.

Christos,

At the end of the day, it's your money and you spend it as you see fit. ;)

If you want a card for playing games, then the Audigy2 EX is clearly an overkill.

If you want a card for recording, then the Audigy2 EX is not the best choice.

If your MOBO doesn't have built-in sound, then personally I'd buy a really cheap card for the games and a decent audiocard for recording. I don't play games on my PC so I don't have first-hand experience as to whether my Terratec can be used for games.

It is possible to have two cards in one machine. I know this to be true, I had an AWE64Gold and my Terratec EWX24/96 co-habiting quite happily for a considerable time.

I can only offer you my most sincere advice Christos: steer well clear of Creative cards. They no longer lead the field in audio. Their advertising hyperbole makes these cards look like the best things on the planet. The reality is that they aren't.

If you are happy to accept the limitations placed on you by owning an Audigy2 EX, then buy it.
