Which route best serves my purposes?

Here's my situation:

I'm planning to set up a bit of a home studio in my basement. I've done a fair amount of reading on the subject, mostly introductory books aimed at musicians setting up home studios, so I think I'll be alright once I get the gear. I'm hoping to spend somewhere in the $3,000 range at the moment. My main goal is to be able to record myself on drums, but i'm looking for something that I can eventually expand/upgrade to do more extensive live tracking, and some MIDI stuff for fun.
My question is as follows: Would I be better off investing in a standalone mixer and digital hard-disk recorder, or investing in a new computer to use as the center of a DAW? Any advice on specific gear? Thanks for all of your time and help!
