I'm in the $4-500 range for each mic and I want two for stereo imaging. pls help.

I would suggest AT4050 but those are about $100 above your range (sweetwater.com has them at $599), but they are honestly worth twice the price. not only that, but it's a very versitile microphone that has many applications. if not, the AT 4040 is a very good microphone as well..

if you check out my song You Said I Said in the MP3 forum, you'll hear the 4040's on the drum set as overheads..

another standard is C414, but i don't really like it to be honest..to bright and revealing for my tastes. on top of that, they're quite expensive, about twice the price for the 4050. i have both the 4033, 4040, 4050 and C414 at my disposal when recording..and i almost never go for the C414.

If i were you, i'd get a matched pair of Josephson C42 mics. a matched pair runs around $900. and the single, non-matched run at about $400 each.

If I had 400 to spend each on overheads I'd grab a pair of earthworks TC-20s. Flat response to not completely over do your drum image with hyped high end. The At 4050 and 4040 are also very very good suggestions but I'm giving you from the SDC side rather then LDCs

I can also once again push at the KEL HM-1s, $100 each with great rep and flat response.

Ben
