Go with the 002 just so you can use Pro Tools if you have/want to.

the fw1082 is compatable with pro-tools
Really? Are you sure?

I don't think so - I thought it was only compatible with Digidesign/M-Audio products.

thats what i thought too until a guy at the gc told me it was and i came home and read the specs and it says works with pro-tools

I highly recommend that you take ANYTHING that anyone tells you at GC with a grain of salt. Who ever told u that has no idea what they are talking about.

What they are referring to is that it is HUI compatible, which means that you can use it as a control surface for pro tools, not as an audio interface

From Tascam:

The FW-1082 includes Cubase LE professional 48-track, 96kHz recording and mixing software. It also includes GigaStudio 3 LE software sampling software, a 64-voice version of our groundbreaking streaming sampler. It works well with Steinberg Cubase and Nuendo, Apple Logic, Apple Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack Pro and Motion, Cakewalk Sonar, MOTU Digital Performer. It also works as a HUI control surface and MIDI interface for Digidesign Pro Tools.

so that means it works with pro tools right? cuz wut u have highlighted there says works as a control surface AND midi interface right? wut does hui mean anyway? and what version of pro tools will it work with?

control surface AND midi interface right

yep and neither one of those will produce any sound or allow you to record any audio, just like the FW-1082 under pro tools.

wut does hui mean anyway?

Human User Interface, its a control surface designed by mackie for PT4, its now pretty much the standard protocol for PT control surfaces

what version of pro tools will it work with?

As a midi interface, both versions, but you can buy a midi interface for $20

IT WILL NOT WORK AS AN AUDIO INTERFACE FOR ANY VERSION OF PT

Don't listen to 98% of the stuff you hear at GC. It's almost like they're car salesmen, they'll tell you anything to get a sale and more than half of them are clueless. Would you take auto repair advice from a babysitter? :D

PT is ONLY compatible with digidesign hardware, PT M-powered however is compatible with M-Audio hardware.

M-Audio interface products can run Pro Tools. But, the fw1082 can only be used as a control suface with Pro Tools (like the Motor Mix or Pro Control) as stated. The person at GC didn't give you all the info. You won't be able to use the audio hardware.

When I go to GC I sometimes have to correct them and it becomes a back and forth thing. Then I have to show proof of what I'm talking about just to get what I want. Normaly I know what I want and buy without asking questions.

From Tascam:

If you get the Digi002, you can run different audio programs on the interface. So, get the 002 so you have Pro Tools. You don't have to run Pro Tools, but at least you have it for other projects that may come in...

Check this out: Print this out and show it to GC who tried to sell you something that wouldn't work for you. :p

So here it is:

Can you control Pro Tools with the fw1082. YES
Can you use the hardware: NO

ok so i think i'm a lil confused but this is what i'm understanding......if i hook up the 1082 i will be able to play midi into pro-tools and record it (using the control surface) but i won't be able to hear any sound on my speakers cuz the 1082 isn't compatable with pro tools for sound correct? or am i wrong?

no, you can play MIDI but the MIDI signals are just notes, with no sounds.

But generally, I think you got the point.

That's tricky. Now the question is if Pro Tools will see the midi interface hardware. On the 002 you have midi ports that are made for Pro Tools in the interface.

I'm searching now........

I just looked it up and Pro Tools will see the midi interface on the 1082. So you can hook a midi controller and set it up in Pro Tools.

This is what I found:

It works well with Steinberg Cubase and Nuendo, Apple Logic, Apple Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack Pro and Motion, Cakewalk Sonar, MOTU Digital Performer. It also works as a HUI control surface and MIDI interface for Digidesign Pro Tools.

I'd say for what you are going to spend, just get the 002 mixer package...

ok i just found out on 2 sites that the 002 is discontinued :(

Wow,
It sure is. I suspect that there would be a replacement forthcoming since it was their flagship LE product

I wonder why the Digidesign site doesn't reflect that?

I've heard rumors of the 003 being released soon, but nothing confirmed.
