Which of these NEARFILEDS best suited for all acoustic music? Your favorites?

I do mostly 2 track acoustic guitar/vox recordings, sometimes other acoustic instruments. I prefer that the monitors sound good at lower listening volumns too and can handle being pushed when needed - which is seldom. I'd like SMOOTH and a fairly flat response.

Would any of these monitors or other be best suited for my preferences considering low monitoring levels and all acoustic material (NO ELECTRONICS). Budget is a factor, no more than 1k or preferably less. Your favorites in the under 1k range?

Event Studio Precision
KRK V8 II
Tannoy Reveal Active
Wharfedale Pro Diamond 8.2 Powered
Yorkvilles Active
OTHER???

Yes, I plan on going out and listenting to monitors but no one has all of these readily available to monitor in the same room side by side - so, your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks for your input!

If your doin' acustic music...then perhaps some of those Yammaha ones...they seem to get great reviews in the clarity department...but as a 5in they don't have as much bass as others...Im not an accustic Muso...I hope there is someone else who can respond...Unless you have a fully treated room a smaller speaker might be best for you.

Thanks for responding! My room is treated very well. I thik I'm swaying toward the Event Precision. I read a great review on them. My first choice was however the KRK V-9 Series !!. Sure would like to hear from ohers.

yes the event precision series have 3 very good reviews. One of them gave them 5 of 5 points. I am not sure which of the review it was but most reviews could be read at the event side.

The prices of the precision series is very expensive in germany and i thought about purchasing them from the states but then i had not enough money to do that, so i now decide to buy the 8.2 wharfedales.

Next year i could buy those too and would use both

I read that review in Electronic Musician but I have also read elsewhere it's a lot of hype too. I am considering the wharfedales too but get confused by all the postings on Actives or Passives being the ones to get these days. I also have my doubts that a monitor so low in cost can hold up. Anyone?

your comparison?

imagine you've been sifting thru the archives too.
it's funny, i was going in a <$300 range??
and Whafs8.2A seemed to take it.
You have them in a much higher $$ group.

i saw good articles on all in your list.

what type of music, i think comes into play.
Many reviews/threads didn't like Yamaha MSP5,
but others that record Acoustic and Vocals seemed
to love the high/mid range?

Some really like the Berhinger Truth 8"/175watts
(1st Behringer product I've heard numerous good reviews).
8" is better bas for the thumpers.

of course now everyone has a sub??? you have a sub???
what! no sub??
:)

For my 2 cents I am pretty fond of the KRK ST8. I listen at low levels to harp that I record which has some very low notes. This is the first speaker I have had that I thought sounded better than what I am hearing through my Grado headphones, (lack bass). cheap too, easy to find these new at 1/2 off such as zzounds...

It's good to hear that not everyone is using the Wharfedale!

I do not use a sub or paln on it. I dont think it's necessary for my low key guitar/vox material. I am trying not to make money an object and wouldn't mind spending $1000 but if something is as good as everyone claims it is, I'd go with the Wharfs but I'm still confused by whether the P's or the A's are the ticket.

In another post where Harvey Guest comments on loving the 8.2P's I wonder which power amp he's using, possibly a BRYSTON.

I can say at this time I have taken the Yorkvilles and the Reveals off of my list. I heard the Yorks and they are not for me and I do have an old pair of Tannoy 6.5's that served me well which I will be keeping along with whichever new set I go for.

I'd still like to hear from others who use the KRK V8 Series II and the Precision 8 to confuse me even more. :D

yeah, but you said you've used the Tannoys a long time?
i heard thats 50% of the fight,
that is getting to know your monitors and your
room.
whats wrong with them? no bass, too much mids?
just don't translate well? gear lust?? :)

I found something interesting, on the mixing forum too.
but related to SPL & monitors...you may want to try this at home!

Excuse me if your way past this level,
my first SPL read on my studio-room and
it was quiet fun and informative footprinting the monitors in your own room/studio.

i think the best combination are monitors with 6,5´´ woofer and an sub.
It makes for me no sense to buy one with 8´´ and add them later an sub.
As example behringer did show now at namm an sub for around 200 euro.

And another aspect is that the harmony of monitors with 6,5`` woofers seems to be the best.

@ garf

which grado do you use ?
did you hear ultrasone headphones ?

.

Yep, no bass, high are false and LUST! I'd like to compliment them with a larger monitor or replace them with similar size. I'm surprised no one here is using or commenting on the KRK V-8 or Event Precisions.

I considered a sub but being my music has no bass (acoustic/vox) I figured it wasn't needed.

makes sense?

I agree.
But the make $$ sense selling 8" with sub...
Guitar Amp with sub added$$
Keyboard Amp with sub added$$

6.5" sounds decent for a home studio.
I'd stretch to bet a 4" would do well.

On the Mixing web, they discussed getting an SPL meter
and checking YOUR room & monitors.

I did this, see previous attachment. Excel DB vs. MY Monitors (with
room playing its part). Basically placed the meter where my head would
be and ran the CD with test tones...20hz thru 20khz. BEEEEPPPPPP

it was fun and plan on going to GC and grabbing a pair of BX5's or
similar. Running same test which takes about 30minutes.

What if it's my room not the monitors!! I can spend some $$ on
more wall traps instead of monitors.

I went thru this same "uneducated" microphone deal where I was changing out microphones, not knowing it was the PRE-AMP all along!

recommend this SPL test, for basic "read" of your setup.
85db is the volume, technically, where all FREQ'S are FLAT.
thats my understanding....and its quiet LOUD.

4 and 5= need a sub

I listened for ~3hrs at GC, all the monitors they had.
Maybe I shouldn't have listened to the high $$ ones.

The 4" and BX5 were slammed hard due to this comparison.
no subs were added.

I'm not an audiophile, so in all fairness the BX5's or KRK4" may be fine
for my small 10x10 drwall studio..with home made 703traps.

but they sounded so far away from the $1300 Mackies and KRKV8,
i din't bother testing 'em at home.
My old passive RAM 2-way 6.5" will maybe do..until I can REALLY upgrade.

I do just acoustic recording, acoustic and classical guitar. After trying perhaps 10 different monitors (many at my studio), the monitors I chose were Dynaudio BM6 passives with a Hafler P3000 power amp. Good mid-level performance at a reasonable price.

BM6A is a serious monitor as is your amp. I will I could afford them but my budget is $1000 or less. I'd like to get that BM6 sound in a less expensive package. Any ideas?

AK, if you're interested in the BM6A's, the BM5A's have just been introduced - and these things really level the playing field for monitors under $1000. Nothing touches them in that price range. Clear detail and imagey. You'll get zero listening fatigue from Dynaudios, and you can even work at lower levels and still hear everything clearly. And yes there's enough low-end on them.

I believe the BM6 passives can be found for $820 or so new. A used Hafler P3000 for $250. Yeah, that's over $1,000, but not by much.

You guys really got me going now. The BM5A is probably amazing but now I'm thinking of the passive BM6 with the Hafler. $800 on the 6's ain't bad, I'll price around on the P3000, used would be cool.

Would you guys say that either choice would be a better choice over the Precision 8's?

big 8's

these ST8's are nice!
excellent price per $.
$124ea from $250.

i may switch to these, as the more i thought
about it i will want an outbard amp to have A,B, & C
speakers (and a pre-amp/patchbay in all reality)

Big 8" too....oh yeah.
