Bass track, drum tracks and general synth sounds to incorporate into my guitar stuff.

Sonar/Cool Edit
Audigy 2 with midi input

Rock/Metal/Blues/Psychedelic
 
save up and look for a sound module and midi controller on ebay.

my recommendation:
Roland JV1010 - $200-300 (ebay)
MK4902 midi controller - $50 (ebay)

gives you way better result than the 2 keyboards above.

Couldn't have said it better!

If you are not a keyboardist, you might want to check out the softsynths as well. You can build a midi file on your computer and run it through the softsynth.

Just a thought.
 
Hey I'm looking for the same thing with pretty much the same budget. I'm a guitar player so I don't know anything about this. Any more recommendations?

Anything that DOESN'T have built in speakers.
