Which multitrack software

After years of being a die-hard musician I have finally seen the light and need for computers in the studio.
What I want to know is what software is the best for multitrack recording?

I don't really know if there is a "best" but only preferences. I prefer the Cakewalk Pro Audio / Soundforge combination (SF as more of an editor). I've heard Cubase VST is killer as well but I have never used it.

Someone out here may know of a site where you could download some demos...then choose.

Cubase VST

In this country Cakewalk is pretty strong. However, in Europe and England every one uses Cubase VST. May be an issue if you're considering studio work over there.

Also, if you want to go cheap, look at Powertracks Pro or n-Tracks studio.

I use Powertracks personally and find it to have all of the features I need to get the job done, at a fraction of the price.

Well, as long as i'm here, I might as well throw in a vote for Cool Edit Pro, since it seems to always be the last program recommended (even behind n-track it seems) I've been using CEP for a few years, and i've found it to be the easiest to use...I've tried Cakewalk, Cubase, N-Track, SAW, etc, and keep coming back to CEP for some reason...if you're on a budget though, I would recommend N-Track, it's only like $40, can't go wrong with that..

I can't use CoolEdit 2000 because there is no MIDI support. If you are doing anything MIDI you need a prog that handles MIDI and digital audio simultaneously.
