Well i've almost figured out exactly what my new computer will be but im down to one last thing, the motherboard. I'm definately going intel because of the stability thing. It has to be a MB that takes 478pin CPU's. Also im going to be using RDRAM so it has to be one of thier 850 series i think. As far as PCI cards i think i'll only need one for my omni studio and possibly one for a RAID controler card but would it help to have an extra PCI slot or two so that i have a gab between cards? I've given up on trying to save money on my computer so dont give me ur opinion based on price (within reason, i dont want to pay too much)
As far as i can tell from intel's web site there are only three to chose from :
850GB
850MD
850MV
So which one should i get?

I just saw somewhere that the 850GB is 423 pin. Will this make a big difference, especialy since i wont be upgrading my CPU for a while? I think i hard somewhere thats the only real advantige to the 428pinboards is that it was the pin type intel were going to continue using for their CPUs. Is this right?

Can anyone out there help me? I dont want to but the wrong motherboard!

The socket 423 boards are now the same price as the 850 boards...don't spend the same money for an abandoned chipset. I would highly recommend an 850 board. I'm using the Asus P4T 850 mobo in one of my machines. BE SURE to stick with socket 478 boards and go for the new P4 Northwood chip (.13u core). The northie overclocks like a charm and has a 512kb cache. After increasing the fsb on my mobo a few notches, I have a 1.8 GHz northie running at a rock solid 2.2GHz (it could go much higher) with 512Mb of Samsung RDRAM and no additional cooling! At $205 this CPU may be the best value yet.

BTW- check out newegg.com and mwave.com they might have cheaper prices:)

Yeah but i wont we upgrading for quite some time and when i do i'll probably have to get a new MB anway, so does it realy matter? Will the 850GB be any disatvange speed wise with 423 pin connectors. I think i read somewhere that it doesnt effect speed. Am i right?

Come on people vote!! I dont wanna have to make this coice on my own and stuff it up.

the shits too new, man.. no one has tested it out fully. Which means it sux. You are the Beta team... tell us how it goes.

xoxo

I always go for a Gigabyte mobo. Good value, good performance and never had a problem with 'em.

Thanks guys i think ill srick with the 850GB since i get the idea that intel motherboards are the most stable and it looks good enough for my uses. I just hope it wont be a mistake.

Mobo recommendation

I've read some stuff on the Web,

seems that there are only three great Mobo makers. Asus, Abit and MSI.
Go for an 850. That's where things are heading. Socket 478 definitely.
The Intel seems a fine choice, but the price is not far from an Asus I think.
So why not get an Asus P4t. I believe it's the best Mobo that money can buy.
