Hey Aristo,
I got your PM but i thought it might be better to post this up for everyones information.
Werd up Xstatic.
The Tannoy Reveal Passive were the first monitors i owned about 4 years ago. I have been mixing with them since.
They were a pretty good monitor set but its hard to say if i recommend them for everyone. When i bought them there wernt very many known options in the price range. They were kinda the bang for a buck back then. They were good and i did alot of good mixes on them once i learned the world of mixing on monitor speakers in general. But i dont really think they are accurate now that i have switched to the Dynaudios. But the funny thing is i also had Mackie HR824s for about a year and i didnt think they were much better. Especially now hearing the Dynaudios i put the two in the same class with the exception that the Mackies had much lower sub frequency response and a little more dynamic. But i put the Mackies with the Tannoys because i didnt feel either of them were that accurate. Workable once you learned them but the Dynaudios blow both of them away a million times over in my opinion. Cant wait to hear something better than them.
I havnt tried the Yorkvilles unfortunately so i wont beable to give you very good pros and cons of each. But my gut feeling tells me that the Yorkvilles are more similiar to the sound of the Mackies. I say this because Tannoy has a sound in their own which is very different than the normal monitor sound. Which can be good or bad. Even the the Mackies are far better than the Behringer Truths and the M Audio monitors i put them in the same criteria as COMPARED to the Tannoys. So my gut feeling is the Yorkvilles are going to have a similiar sound to Mackies. No they are not the same, but they definately are way far from the Tannoys.
Soooooo...
Pros of Reveals -
Smooth sounding Highs and mids.
Minimal on the ear fatigue side. You can listen to these things for hours.
Things sound really good on them. This would be a bad thing if they didnt translate well.
They look cool.
Cons of the Reveals -
The smooth sounding Highs and Mids can be a little deceiving. Which is why i consider them innaccurate. Once you learn how they translate it doesnt matter. But be very careful.
The low end is weak - This was the toughest part for me on these monitors. I was always guessing where the bass frequencies were. I think it only goes down to 62Hz. You learn to work with it though, but sometimes theres no telling whats gonna happen in that bass.
The dynamics were a bit weak also so it was hard to judge attacks to compression.
I preferred mixing on the Tannoys to the HR824s. But that could have been because i was more used to the Tannoys. I wish i knew more about the Yorkvilles to give you a more solid comparison. But like i said, my gut feeling with this says they will both be about the same once you get used to them. Neither of them in my opinion will blow the other out of the water. But i think the chances are you will be happier with the Yorkvilles because of the tighter dynamics. But expect ear fatigue. The Mackie HR824s killed my ears with its crap mid range. But get the Tannoys if you are looking for the smooth non fatiguing sound that you can sit back and listen to all day long.
Im stumbling with my answer now so obviously theres no right or wrong on this one.
BTW im probably selling
my Tannoy Reveal Passives if your interested. Oh, and i didnt have any trouble making the switch to the Mackies or the Dynaudios from the Reveals. Just takes a quick adjustment with the different styles.
Hope this helped. Its amazing how different monitors do sound from each other though.
