okay im sure that this is a really stupid question that i should be ashamed to ask... but since im new to recording music i will anyway....

im looking for a tascam recording unit, but dont know if i should get an older model (porta07, porta05), or a newer 414. my queston is this: can you use line inputs for mics on the porta 07?, i need 4 mics for my drum set, but i dont know if you can hook up 4 mics to the porta 07, without an adapter.... can you do that or are the line inputs not usable for mics? thanks for your help to a clueless starter...

By your own stated purpose, you'll need the 414, and I'd recommend the 414mkII, specifically.

The Porta 05 and 07 have only 2 mic preamps, (chan. 1 & 2), while channels 3 & 4 are for line level inputs, only. You can't effectively plug 4 mics into either of these units, unless you have another 2 external preamps to use.

The Tascam 414mkII has 4 mic inputs, w/preamps, PLUS it's a heck of a lot newer than the 05 & 07, which if you're talking about used equipment off Ebay, makes a significant difference.

The 414mkII is still available new from retailers, but the 424mkIII (a much better machine) has sold out of retailers', and is an Ebay-only item.

The short answer,... is you buy as much Tascam Portastudio as you can afford.
