Yer not in "best" territory - you'll have to triple it to even approach it. You could go ten times that amount without breaking a sweat. So you're talking about "what's the best I can do for the budget?" Different question.
BUT:
For five hundred bucks, you can do pretty well with the new Yamaha MX line. Nice boxes and they deliver nicely for the money.
If you have a mixer - Mackie or equivalent - and you want a little more headroom, try picking up (3) M-Audio DMP3 outboard preamps. That'll give you six channels of very nice for the money preamps that will give an old mixer a new attitude. About $450.
