A while back, I made a similar post. Long story short, my band has some recordings that were mixed by our producer (Original mix). However, upon hearing the mixes, our bassist decided that he could do a better job, so he took a crack at it (New mix). Anyway, I'd love to get your feedback as to whose mix sounds better, and why. All mixes are mastered unless otherwise stated.

We're an alternative indie rock. We're not really called 'Docahala'.

First song - Legs

Original Mix:

New Mix:

Second song - Breakout

New Mix:

Original Mix (NOTE: This version is not mastered):

Third song - Leave You Behind

Original Mix:

New Mix:

I realize that these might be a bit too much (3 songs and all), so really broad general ideas are welcome. Your thoughts would be really appreciated! This essentially will determine which version we will be using. :)

Here's my votes [I listened to the first minute of each, figure that was plenty to get a feel for the mixing style]...

Legs: New Mix (a little sibilance though)

Breakout: New Mix

Leave You Behind: New Mix

Your bassist was 100% right. It's not that the original mixes are BAD, they're just not very interesting and sound a little muddy/mirky compared to what the bassist accomplished with the same source material.

Singer has a good voice and I liked the material here. :)

Thanks for your insight, Pinky! They definitely had different visions for how the songs should sound. Insight on their respective visions can already be gained just by listening to the first couple of seconds. :)

I like al 3 new mixes as well. The old ones sound squashed and even the waveforms look much more compressed than the new ones. The increased dynamics in the new versions really open up the guitar sounds and the vocals.

Good songs too, the singer has some chops.

Agree with this

Yes, the 3 New mixes get another vote! It was interesting to hear the effect of over-compression (which I am often guilty of) side by side with a more open mix. As for the band and the songs, you guys sound great!

I listened to the first song. The new mix is definitely better. More power. However, the vocal seem a little harsh.

I'm just A/B ing the first song (legs). The new mix definitely sounds better. There's much more of a sense of "space" with it. The reverb is better; each instrument occupies a more distinct part of the spectrum and so sounds through clearer; etc.

Pretty good song.

Looks like it was a one-sided poll. REALLY APPRECIATE all the feedback guys! This is a great place to get non-subjective semi-anonymous feedback. And glad you dig the music too!

Second mixes sounds better. I really like the vocals and the sense of space that the new mix achieved. Music breathes, instead of being squashed. That's the problem with producers nowadays, they want everything to sound loud, but loud oftentimes mean murky.
