Which Mics to rent.....

Hey guys

I am doing a project hear pretty soon, and i am looking to rent some mics and would like your guys opinion. I have access to the following mics

SM58 (3)
SM57(1)
C1000 (2)
Small diaphram Geffel mic ? (2)
C2000 (2)
crappy SD Apex Condensor (2)
crappy LD Apex condensor (1)
Rode NT 1000 (1)
AKG D112 (1)


I am looking at renting two SM81's for drum OH, some Sennheiser Md-421's for toms/guitar cabs, and i would like a better vocal mic than the Rode or C 2000's (any suggestions?). I can rent pretty much anything (within reason). So what do you guys think? Are these mics my best option? Or are there better mics for me to rent? The band is a screamo/metalcore band with two guitar players.

Try and get a few options for vocal mics, if possible. For screamo, the sm57 might be the mic. Also look into the SM7 or EV RE20. Maybe a nice LDC, like a Neumann, Telefunken, Brauner, etc.

The singer also sings a lot, and its not all screaming. And with the vocal mic it would be nice if it had more uses than just the vocal.

Well obviously you could use the sm57 for lots of other things...i would probably track the screaming and the actual melodic singing with two different mics....just my idea....no clue what mic to suggest for that...cause there are millions so whatever i say im sure someone else hates or has a better suggestion hahaha...but the 57 is a good choice all round.

get an akg 414. such a stellar sounding, versitile mic. even rocks on vocalists who don't need too much coloration, can sound amazing on a raging guitar amp. rocks on a snare, too. pretty much can sound awesome at any instrument and some vox.

a sennheiser 421 is another versitile mic, the guitarist will love you, the drummer will too, good call on that one.

as per another vocal mic, whew, that's more of a toughie cause it could go either way with each voice. I've had luck with the neumann tlm103 being rather neutral and working for many voices, esp if you have a nice pre like the grace 101.

Rent an upper end Groove Tube or an SM7. They will both sound good wherever you throw 'em

The store i am renting from doesn't have SM-81's in stock, but they recomend the RODE NT4's for OH''s. What do you guys think? I have never used them

They have 1 421 in stock, but they recomended the sennheiser 604's. My only hesitation is that the 604's probably won't sound great on Guitar Cabs compared to the 421's. So should i get 604's, or one 421 and a a 609?

I am leaning towards a SM-7 for vocals, but the AT4047 seems good, and i got recomended the SE 5600A. Anyone else have a opinion?

why did they 'recomend' these mics? did you audition your voice through a bunch and they said that the 4047 sounded best? you know what you want most of all. I've never touched the 4047, so I cannot attest to it's virtues. gets awesome reviews on here all the time, tho.

the 421 is like a better sounding 57, and the 58 is a 57, so maybe they're trying to give you more options? you're for sure going to want a nice condensor when recording electrics--57 or 421 up close, condensor back 2 feet or so to taste/phase. or just the cond. up front with a pad on. you will appreciate not having that 57 (or a dynamic) bias on every track, too. SDCs have never worked on guitar for me(other that acoustic, duh)
