I'll be recording a bass guitar on Saturday, and I need to suggestions on what I should use to mic a bass amp. My two options are a Rode NT1A or Shure Beta 52 bass drum mic. I've done some recording with the NT1A and it's good at catching the full frequency of the instrument, but leaves a little to be desired in the lows. I've only heard about using a bass drum mic on an amp, but I'm worried it won't catch enough mid to high range tones. Does anyone have any advice for me on what mic I should use?

Use both, between the 2 you should have it covered. ;)

How about recording direct? Try it if you aren't happy with the mic sound.

If this is a live band thingy, I'd skip the mic. You'll get bleed, and it'll be tough to be happy no matter what you end up with. I can't believe I'm the only one to say this so far, but here goes.........

Sans Amp RBI

And that's the name of that tune, as my friend Baretta used to say. ;) Blend the two if you want, and have options. If your only options are an NT1A and a Beta 52, try the Beta 52. What have you got to lose? But really, before Saturday, rent an RBI. You'll wonder how you lived without it.
