I'm in the market for a pair of mics (<$400-500) that will likely need to serve two primary purposes.

1. Drum overheads in a 3-4 mic setup(recorderman). I need something that will do the toms justice and not over-hype the cymbals. Probably something with a tight-ish pattern(bad environments) and pretty high SPL handling.

2. Stereo micing a string quartet.

Does such an animal exist? I also just acquired a pair of MSH-2 omnis. If these would be better suited for the quartet, factor that into the search for application #1.

A few mics that have caught my eye on here and other places include:

Kel HM-1
ATM450
CAD M179
Oktava MK-012 (I already have one of these)

Thanks!!

Studio Projects C-4's, *and* another MC012. The C-4's are great as jazz/country/pop-rock overheads, and IMO will be much better on the string quartet. The Oktavas are great as rock overheads. You can do all of the above for about $450.-Richie

Thanks, Richard.

I listened to some C4 samples and was quite impressed. They sound more "open" than the MK-012s, judging by the recordings I heard. Pretty nice "zing" on the acoustic guitar samples too...

Another option would be to get one more oktava and some of the Red R12 capsules for them. This gives you a LD choice in your arsenal as well:)

Plus one on this idea. I bought the red capsules when they were on sale ($178 for the pair) and they are a great deal for the price. I now have a pair of SDC's and LDC's that I have spent a total of around $325 for including tax (I purchased my 012's back in the day when you could get them for $100 for the pair on sale)!:)

yeah +1 on this.
i have a pair of oktavamodded russian mk-012's with matched cardioid capsules and two red r-12's and it's a nice versatile pair. next up for me are the omni capsules. rtt lomo also makes a few ldc heads for the 012's as does oktava. oktava seems committed to developing new heads and other products for the 012 which is cool.
