Over the last year and a half I've been using 3 Alesis blackface ADATs as my main multitrack medium. They're horrible! I've had a tape brake in the middle of a session. I ended up using scotch tape to put the tape back together almost ruining the entire demo. Meanwhile, the poor little rock band I was recording almost had a heart attack. Another problem is, ADATs take forever to sync during record or playback. I bought these things because I was able to add tracks one unit at a time, and they're cheap. However, they're unreliable, clunky, and tape is a waist of money these days.
Well I'm ready to make jump into the non-linear recording world; I was wondering if anyone had input on which medium I should buy next?
I like the Alesis HD24 because I can put it in place of my ADATs without making too many changes.
Another option, go Protools... the digi002 seems like a nice system, and it would be easier to expand on as far as plug-ins go. However, without buying a focusrite octopre(great little pre's but expensive) or any device with a adat light pipe, I'd be stuck flying only 8 channels at a time. When I record drums, sometime I can easly eat up 8-10 tracks at one time not to mention scratch tracks. But from what I've seen, Protools is almost limit less...
I'm split between which unit would be a better value. Can anyone make any suggestions?
