i voted "other" because you might want to consider a EV RE-20. they are great on kick drums, but they are also great on everything else. i've never been a big fan on mics made specifically for kick drum because they usually have a bizarre built in EQ curve that make them useless on most other stuff.

I voted d112 but the RE20 works very well, in fact the RE20 works well for almost everything

You can't really go wrong on any of them. If you've got $300 the RE20 is a no-brainer. I haven't used the D6 but I gather it's got a deep lows and particularly extended highs = metal.

This is an aside, but I often see people quote prices on here a fair bit lower than even my google-fu has located. The RE20 is consistently $399 on most sites I've seen - is there a site I'm not familiar with that has better deals?

Personally, I love the Shure Beta 91. I work with alot of metal bands and used to put a numerous of mics on the kick just to give me as much frequency content as possible to work with. Every time I would end up just keeping the Beta91 track and discarding the others - it always gives me the best high end click and bass clarity right down into the sub frequencies.

So now I just use it every time without giving it much consideration.

I've owned an AT Pro 25, a Sennheiser e604, and currently own and use the ATM25. I found that I liked the Pro 25 (a budget-priced mic) better than the e604, but liked the ATM25 the best of the 3. I do like the Sennheiser e604's on toms and snare though.

D112 or the RE20 for 'natural'

The CAD KBM412 is 3/4 less the price than these others but it seems to get good reviews, but again, little mention. Anyone own one of these?

I have a KBM412... mainly I use a D112 on kick, but some of the time, I'll double up the kick mics, and use the D112 up close, and then the KBM412 as a second mic about 1 away from the outside head, and then blend the two together.

My impressions are that the CAD is a little more natural sounding acoustically than the D112 and generally a little more "open", but that may be the placement as much as anything.

Love the EV RE20 but have had an eye-opening experience with the EV RE27. Its simply a bit better in the kik.

Would you mind talking about this a bit. I love my RE-20 but I have terrible G.A.S. with mics.

Sure. Its an old thread anyway.

The RE27 has a bit more clean in the upper mids than the RE20. Its not as pillowy in lows. That being said it is an incrdible horn mic as is the RE20. Both are worthy of a mic locker addition and having one of each and doing a lot of drums, you'll find a spot for both of them almost immediately. I still like the 20 as a vocal mic a bit more. It has that warm little blurry edge. It definately makes things seem bigger than real life. The 27 is a bit more surgical for this. Neither is bad at anything.
