Which is wrong: MBox 2 Mini, Speakers or something else?

Hi:
I tried posting something about this on here before and didn't get an answer, so I'm hoping someone out there can help me. I've been recording in my home studio with a Mac Book Pro laptop, M Box 2 Mini, Pro Tools 10 software, M Audio Studiophile AV speakers, Yamaha RH 5ma headphones and Glyph GT 050Q external hard drive and only started having problems recently. The issues I have are these: 1. When playing back a song or recording an accompanying instrument like bass, I hear a terrible static after about thirty seconds after the song starts that gets progressively worse and then drowns everything out so I can't hear a thing. 2. After previously being able to hear the music I've recorded in both ears on my headphones, I can now only hear the music in mono coming out of my left ear phone. (This happens when I'm listening to one track of a song or multiple tracks with vocals.) 3. After shutting down and restarting my computer, external hard drive, M Box 2 Mini and Pro Tools 10, the problem goes away for a little while once I open the song file again, but then returns soon afterwards. 4. When I unplug the M Box 2 Mini and play back songs on the Pro Tools Aggregate I/O playback engine it sounds good and normal without any of the complications that come when I use the M Box 2 Mini. 5. I've tried correcting the problem by replacing my headphones and the USB cable for the M Box 2 Mini, but that did not solve the problem.
So, my questions are this: I know there is probably something wrong with either my M Box 2 Mini or my M Audio speakers, but I'm not sure which one. (But, if someone out there thinks its something else please let me know.) Since, it will probably cost less to replace either the M Box 2 Mini or the speakers, I'm going to do that. But before I do, can anyone tell me what they think is going wrong and why?

Ok, you've done a bit of elimination.
If I understand correctly, the problem isn't there if you playback using built in sound, so it's either the mbox or the speakers.

Could you plug headphones into the mbox mini and see if the problem exists through them?
If the problem is heard through headphones then it's either a hardware fault with the mbox, or some kind of driver/compatibility issue.

I take it you've been to avid.com for the most recent drivers for your system?

Thanks for your help. I've got the latest drives for my Pro Tools system and I only hear the static through the M Box so that seems to be the problem. Now, I'm off to replace it.

Did you rule out the speakers somehow? Doing that would be the first step in trouble shooting.

The next step is would be trying another pair of line outputs on the mbox instead of the main outs, and trying different software to rule out PT.
You could also try a different USB port. If you're plugged into a hub, bypass that.
