For example, the VTB-1 (supposedly) dusts most pre's under $1000 on a RCA 77DX ribbon.

A few months ago I was trying to find out where about my Direct Pro Pre's sat in the mix of Pre's... and from others opinions and advice I was told that they are about the same as the MAudio DMP3. From listening examples I was not too immpressed w/ the VTB1 but the DMP3 I was... In this one example where someone played the same bass riff through the DMP3, RNP, and VTB1 w/ and w/ out Tube... The VTB1 sounded not to great either way and the DMP3 was very close to the rnp... a little fuller bottom (IMO) but the RNP was a little more detailed.

I used to have an Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96. I would describe the preamps as "muffled." That's what they sounded like to me and everybody else who compared them to a Grace 101 into an Apogee Rosetta. With the Aardvark, I always found myself trying use EQ, exciters, you name it, etc. to get some reasonable detail and extension to the high end. After lots of trying things and plenty of frustration, I eventually upgraded to better preamps (Grace, Phoenix Audio) and a better sound card (lynx2). Now no more need to mess around with EQ and stuff to make it sound right.
