I used to have an Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96. I would describe the preamps as "muffled." That's what they sounded like to me and everybody else who compared them to a Grace 101 into an Apogee Rosetta. With the Aardvark, I always found myself trying use EQ, exciters, you name it, etc. to get some reasonable detail and extension to the high end. After lots of trying things and plenty of frustration, I eventually upgraded to better preamps (Grace, Phoenix Audio) and a better sound card (lynx2). Now no more need to mess around with EQ and stuff to make it sound right.
