so everyone seems to be saying that its better to use the line in, than the mic input to record. (i have a dell computer w/ the stock soundmax card and i use an AKG D790 with a Presonus tubepre)

but the line in is a stereo input right? is it ok to plug a mono jack into a stereo input? i've heard that doing that can cause permanent damage

or should i be using some kind of adapter?

i want to upgrade my sound card but in the meantime this is what i got to work with.

It won't cause any damage. And since the mic is a mono source, you wouldn't want to record dual mono. That would be a waste of storage space. It'll be a pain to monitor while recording but that's the limitation of your card. When you're setting up a track to record in your software, the source options should read something like LINE IN LEFT, LINE IN RIGHT, LINE IN STEREO. Just select the LEFT or RIGHT line in, more than likely the RIGHT line input.

LEFT is usually the default for mono, though I imagine RIGHT would work, too.
