Fancy Rock N' Roll
...I got dual HD in my DAW. Quantum 8.4GB 5400RPM, and Seagate 80GB 7200RPM.

Here's the connection...

Primary IDE --> Quantum 8.4GB 5400RPM (Master, OS WinXP Home) --> CD ROM (Slave)

Secondary IDE --> Seagate 40GB 7200RPM (Master, audio, few data) --> CDRW (Slave)

Both are connected using regular IDE cables.

I didn't have any problem with that, but recently, I tested (benchmark) the speed of the HDs using SisSoft Sandra Benchmark utility. I'm not sure what went wrong, but both HD is reported having same speed detected (5400RPM). Well, indeed the Asus MB comes with optional two different cables (regular IDE and 80 pin shielded IDE cable).

My question is, do I have to use the 80 pin shielded IDE cable (the one with black, grey and blue connector) to gain 7200RPM ? That's it. Thank you, beautifull people :)

...please consider Pre-ordering Homerecording.Comp CD's Vol 2 :)

Hmmmm...from what I know (which is admittedly not much) the rpm's of the HD & the IDE cable have nothing to do with each other. The IDE cable matters only to the ATA 33/66/100/133 ratings. That is where the 80 pin shielded IDE cable comes in for the ATA 100 & 133 (I think). I'm not sure why the 7200 rpm HD is showing as spinning at 5400 rpm.

I'm not sure I helped, but I got to spout my ignorance :D

Thanks buddies :)
I'll try Teacher's sugestion this weekend. I'd also like to try using another benchmark application. Just curious if it's SisSoft Sandra's bug or not. Is there anyone know any free downloadable utility to check the HD speed other than SisSoft ? :) Thanks...

You're very close, Jagular.
It's just that you need an 80 pins cable for ATA 66 and up. For ATA 33, a 40 pins cable will do.

I couldn't be 100% right or else it would look like I know what I'm talking about :D

Thanks, whattaguy :)
It's pretty cheap in my local PC store anyway. Just a buck or two :)
