A computer is only as good as the software its running.

Also the software is often the only diffrence between the HD recorder and the computer. The mackie MDR is just a PC(intel celeron) booting off eeprom with their custom software.

I you build a computer with good quality parts(brandname ram, a good proven chipset/motherboard), throw it in a rack case and install a stable operation system (win2k, linux, beos, qnx, etc...) and use good stable software (CEP, umm....) It will be just as good as any standalone HD recorder.

My neighbor, Perry, is a retired Navy guy who literally has to open the hood of his car and tinker with the engine every single morning to get it to start. I've got a big piece of masking tape streched across the front of my computer with the words 'Perry's Car' written on it.

I have hard enough time running Wavelab and a SB card for editing purposes. I'm not about to fuck everything up with a real soundcard and Cakewalk or something. I briefly considered building a pc for audio a while ago, but I had just spent $2k on a new laptop, so I got a Korg D1600. Best think I've ever done.

Turning knobs with a mouse sucks!

Yea turning knobs with a mouse dose suck, thats why you use the keyboard or a control surface. The mouse is the most useless thing on the PC but when using windows you don't have much choice but use it for somethings.

If your computer is running windows 9x your asking for trouble. 2k and maybe XP fixes most of the problems.

Computer recording, or computers in gerneral are still matureing and still has a long way to go.

I would Never Let a mouse touch my knob....

But seriously, I actually prefer mixing with my mouse....Onscreen

Highly personal preference driven..

have to agree there.
computers can be REALLY annoying.
try to install two soundcards in your computer and you'll see what i mean. ;)

adriano

Never had a problem with that.

standalone even though i have never used one in my life

drop outs and the occassional crash get on my nerve, BUT the ability to mix in PC DAW's is a HUGE plus

when i'm talkin standalone i ain't talkin macke, tascam...i'm talkin Radar 24 BTW

I always hear this. And still my win 98se DAW plugs along, solid as a rock. Vegas running with 46 tracks and tons of plugins...never locks or crashes. Am I just lucky? This is my 5th PC with this OS.

shit for you Jake.... I'm running win95, and it NEVER crashes.. and I am not afraid that it will..now that I've said that. Plus, CEP has a decent crash recovery (yeah...I've crashed once or twice over the last three years...but NO more). runs my Waves, CD arch, etc too...no problems here. I see no reason to spend more money.

This are the only reasons you should need for a PC.

WAVES NATIVE GOLD - R-verb, Truverb, and L1-Ultramximizer
Mackie UAD-1 - Teletronic LA-2A compressor, Realverb Pro

Give me these 2 things and I'll give a great sounding recording!

I used to use analog units, and messed with a few digital standalones, but after getting a DAW, the flexability and power just beats everything else. I could see where using both in terms of analog workstation and a DAW would be the best, but I havn't the luxery of expanding to that...yet ;)

I do all tracking to an HD24. Then I fly it into a PC for editing and then back to the HD24 to mix. It works for me.
