I have a very cool cabinet, which has a removable back panel to make it an open back cab. So far I have only used closed back, I was wondering what you guys prefer for recording guitars, open backed cabs or closed?

I don't pay that much attention to it.
I have amp/cabs that are open and ones that are closed....I just plug in and go for a tone I like with whatever am/cab I happen to pick.

Why not just try it both ways and see what the differences are for you. :)
Also...when you open the back, it makes a difference how close you are to a wall...so there's a lot of variety there too.

Yeah, I found that if I have the cab opened back, about two feet from the wall, it gives a real nice tone recording wise, really open and cleaner sounding. Closed backed, it is real bass heavy, and sort of muddy. I used an sm57 but I am gonna try a e609 on it as well, and see how that sounds.

There's about ten billion variables that come into play. Just try it both ways and see which way you like.

Welcome back Greg.
Things should liven up around here now your back
