Which CPU?

Hi guys! I´m planning to upgrade my CPU...

What do you think about putting togheter a DAW around a Sempron 3000 AM2, with one of this Mobos: ECS AM2 GEFORCE6100SM-M 1.0 or MSI AM2 K9MM-V (with NVIDIA MCP61 chipset)?

Please, don´t suggest to wait a little and buy a better machine... I need an upgrade now, and maybe later this year i can replace the Sempron with some dual core technology...

I would like to know which chipset works best for DAW application...
btw, i´m gonna use mostly with my Firepod to record myself drumming...

sempron is not even worth considering/ We have two machines based on semprons (2200 and 2900 IIRC) and they are a joke, our 800 mhz P3 machines are faster.

I have heard horror stories about nvidia chipsets and DAW's but dont have any first hand experience with those. I can recommend any intel based 965 chipset running a core 2 duo though.

I have 1 system (Pentium D) that has the nvidia chipset on it, it runs decent. My other system that runs the 965 intel chipset runs extraordinary.

Anyways

I also second not going with the Sempron. Even the Celerons of today run faster than the Sempron. Also, just for information, ECS makes some half way terrible boards. I've seen MANY MANY MANY ECS boards (not the new new models yet) die on customer systems. At Fry's Electronic's, while back when I was working there, they usually had some type of deal weekly, like $89 for 3800+ with ECS board.... really a steal, but 40% return rate. They were coming back just as fast as they were leaving the store.

Poin taken... Thanks guys!

How about this?

Mobo MSI AM2 K9MM-V (chipset VIA K8M8000 and VT8237R Plus) with a
ATHLON 3600 X2 AM2 DUALCORE?

I´m not sure if i´m gonna to be able to spend more money on my new computer...

Any comments?

That config is a whole lot better than the previous config. Thing is, what type of memory do you already have? Most new boards support 667mhz & 800mhz rated memory. Then you got to look at the video, is it built on, or do you have a PCI video card, cause much of the new boards also don't have the AGP slot any more as everything is converting to PCIE. Those are one of the main concerns you might want to consider. There's also the fact that about half of the newer boards only have 1 IDE controller as everything is moving to SATA.

Mindset, I´m planning to buy DDR2 667 memory too and I´m going with the built in video card...

I found another cool Asrock mobo, the AM2NF6G VSTA (with NVIDIA® GeForce 6100 / nForce 405 Chipset) with video and pci-e (for future updates)Don´t think i´ll need more than 1 ide port...

Any other thing to have in mind?

Thanks guys!

The best thing out there right now is the Core 2 Duo chips. They dominate everything else. Stick with that and get a rock solid ASUS motherboard, some reliable RAM, a beefy Power Supply, and a 3.5Gbs HDD, or for even more speed get a 10K RPM HDD. You'll smoke everyone else with an AMD or pre Core 2 Duo intel chip.

Undrgrnd studio, Core2Duo are out of my budget...

How about this..?

Mobo ASUS M2V-TVM (Chipset VIA® K8M890)
ATHLON 3600 X2 AM2 DUALCORE
DDR2 667Mhz 512mb RAM(i know, i know... i HAVE to have 1 gb at least, but that´s just to start)

What's your budget?

I live in Argentina, and the prices are so different from yours... I know that i can´t buy a Core 2 Duo based cpu...

I found different chipsets...
Any recommendation about this?

NVIDIA nForce 500 Ultra
ATI Radeon XPRESS 1150 (RS485/RS485C)
NVIDIA nForce4
ATI RS485
VIA K8M890
NVIDIA nForce 550 MCP

Thanks!

Oh

I'm not up to date on video cards, you'd have to leave that up to someone else. I know pcx16 is the newest format, I think. So you would want to go with that format.

Avoid nForce chipsets for Pro audio. The nForce3 worked well, but anything after that stinks. Ive tested multiple versions and they all fail.

What are these tests that led you to that conclusion? How did they fail? I've been using nforce chipsets for years and they have all been rock soild.

Those are mobo´s chipsets... I don´t really care about the video card, i´m not a gamer...
I heard a couple of bad things about NviDia on DAWs... that´s why i´m asking...

Thanks anyway!

Save the X2 use Athlon 64 only then get 1Gb of RAM. Memory is more important than CPU IMO.

There's supposed to be a price drop on the Core 2 Duo next week I think, I would wait for that and get the Core 2. It's the best CPU right now and you can even overclock it quite a bit and make it even faster.

Testing is done with every pro audio interface on the market, all major software, multiple UADs, TC's, Magma chassis, firewire DSP, audio benchmarking, high samplerate and high channel count recording tests. For any other info feel free to visit our website.

Hard2Hear, which chipset would you choose for my new A64 X2 3600-based DAW?

ATI Radeon XPRESS 1150 (RS485/RS485C)
ATI RS485
VIA K8M890

Thanks!

If youve GOT to use amd, the asus A8R-MVP board has been pretty reliable over time. I dont know which version of that chip you were looking at.
