I currently have 2 computers available to me and I would like to set up one strictly for recording.

AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.4 Ghz with hyperthreading support
K8S-LA (Salmon) motherboard
SiS 760 chipset
AGP graphics
--------------------------------------------------------
Pentium 4 515 2.93 Ghz
ASUS PTGD1-LA motherboard
Intel 915G Chipset
PCI-E video
--------------------------------------------------------
Both use SATA drives
I would be using Sonar 4/5 for software

Any recommedations as to which machine would make the best choice for a dedicated "recorder"? I am curious as to issues about stability, upgrade potential etc. Thanks, and be kind....I'm a Newbie!

I would say the P4's are much more stable then AMD processors, however, AMD processors are slightly more quicker for your applications. I'm not saying AMD processors crash all the time, it's just how you keep your computer's health that really matters... is your AMD the 1mb L2 cache? or the 512 one? and what about your P4? If I was you, I would take the AMD computer over the P4 because of how AMD designed their processors. I have the same processor, running Sonar 5, and don't have any problems recording, but on my friend's computer, he's running a 3ghz p4 and sometimes it lag's, not during recording but after... both were running with 2gb of DDR memory.
