Im a Drummer, and i need a compressor, cause i hear, bass drums sound a hell of alot better with compresion!

I dont have alot of money at the moment and for a while till i get my head straight. But i was looking at these 2, im not going for amazing quality but decent. I would like to know about both these models and which one will help me more.

I dig this one alot, cause it also has a limiter and gate on it, which i need!

If anything, look up the RNC (Really Nice Compressor) from FMR. Probably the most bang-for-you buck, escpecially for drums!

;) Jayke is right. They are cheap and work cleanly. I bought one and then bought another one. :D

dbx 160A is also very nice and can be had for around $250 on the bay

Unless you absolutely need to have one now... I'd save up. Neither one of those will sound anywhere near what you're expecting. If you save an extra $150 the compressor you will get will sound more than worth it too you.

I found a dbx 1066 for $250 on ebay not too long ago... just keep looking.

These low end outboard comps are not going to improve your sound much better. I ran into the same thing. I own a dbx 1066. I don't even use it for any drum mics. Cubase vst compression works much better for me. To go outboard Im pretty sure you have to spend money on a mid or high grade comp like drawmer, summit, ect....

I may be wrong, but it works for me...

drum compressor

you could always put an effects box compressor in the fx loop of a mixer...
ask some guitar players to let you try out their compressor pedals
i used a dod milkbox compressor (guitar pedal) like this and got my drummer hooked on compression...

Why do you think a 1066 is any higher on the food chain than a 160A?

gate, atack and sustain controls. just more versital in my opinion. plus you get an extra channel.

I don't think the 1066 sounds as good but thats my humble opinion

I agree, but it certainly has more bang for the buck. Plus it's leaps and bounds better than a 3630.

DBX 166XL Dual compressor limiter, for about 250 buck new.

I don't own an RNC... but I thought I read on another thread that the attack was too slow for drums... was actually clicking on fast transients...

We concur! That Alesis really doesn't do much. I've successfully used an rnc for overheads but it took a while do dial it in, the dbx was much faster to get "right" I've also got a British Channel (Joe Meek) that does a really nice job on snare or kick, nice crayon to have in the pack.

The RNC has one of the fastest attacks of any compressor made - almost too fast for a lot of things. Fortunately, it's got a nice attack range control.

From what I've heard, RNC is better sound than dbx, and leaves the 3630 in the dust. It's worth the extra $$$$$
