I dont own one, never have. Whats a good first compressor to own?

It's been said here a thousand times, and in just about every other forum on the internet:

Buy the RNC made by FMR Audio.

What Harvey said. For $179, the RNC is a no brainer.-Richie

Actually.............

.......the Alesis 3630 is MUCH, MUCH better -- more pretty lights!!!

:p :p

And if you buy right now, a FREE DUCK is included with every purchase (restrictions apply, not available in some areas, see your dealer for details).

Depending on what kinda of money this guy might have, you could recommend a Distressor or a Fatso, a LA-2A, Dbx 160 and even a Summit model. A rich guy starting out a new hobby has far more choices of entry level. Entry level doesn't always mean cheaper. If I won the lotto, my choice of a mastering workstation would be...Not Sound Forge ;)

True, but 99% of the time, the guy asking for
a recommendation with no mention of
other gear or budget is just starting out.

Kinda like asking "what is the best mic?"

The long term answer is "a collection of good ones"
but a newbie answer is either something very
cheap like a Behringer that you can learn on
and throw away, or a FMR RNC that wil
be useful for quite a while.

Then you can tell 'em to get a RNP to drive it,
some ribbon mics, etc.

Do Not LISTEN to the advice given by Harv "MicMaster" G!!!
The RNC is the WORST dynamic processor ever MADE!!!!!

However, on the other hand what Cuzzin' Brucie Blue Bear stated is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!!!!!!!!!!

The 3630 is one of the most finest, awesomely constructed, delicately performing units on the market!!!
It's exquisite operation, near flawless circuitry and it's sound-producing processing makes it the envy of almost EVERY compressor ever produced!

I have been blessed by owning and incorporating this superb unit
into my recordings but alas I have moved onto Alesis's top-of-the-line unit; The NANOCOMP!!!!
If you are interested, I will part, most sadly indeed, with the 3630
and sell to you at the low,low price of $150.00!!!!

Again, if interested, hit me at misterqsoundstudios@hotmail.com!

Peace

LOL- MISTERQCUE

That's hilarious.
Moving up to the $50 (retail) Nanocompressor, from the $60 (eBay) 3630.

I think I'd have to pay someone to take my damn nanocompressor off my hands.

You forgot the line "...And since getting my nanocomp every record company is starting to notice me!"

Kind of fond of the Ingersol Rand, but I havent been able to afford one yet. Make sure you get one that runs on 220 if you can, they build up a lot faster.

Run two Urei 1176's in series like Kate Bush did in her home-studio!
