if you got a boss ME8 multiple effects and you won't need any distortion, reverb or what ever of your amp but you want just a bit of that good old 80's-rock-guitar-sound?

I thought about something by line 6 but this would mean I need an extra stomp-box... and this could be expensive, right?

ok, I wasn't exact. saying "stomp-box" I meant a foot-controller. i read about the 'spider' on the line6-page. sounds really cool and even here you can get it at a nice price. but a foot-controller is a must-have for me; more flexibility and - very important - some channels and banks more. but a total of 12 storeable sounds is quite few compared to the 50 of my boss me8.
but hey - I'll go and test it today. if the floor-board is at a good price too, chances are I buy it.

I think you can use any MIDI footcontroller with the Line6 gear. Maybe you can find a cheaper thingy. I like the Boss model. Not too expensive, and you can attach swell-pedals and switches...

THIS MUST BE A JOKE!!!

the line6-foot-controller costs about 60% of the 'spider' itself. I couldn't test the spider today but the flextone which is 1.5 times as expensive as the spider. it couldn't really convince me. then I played that yamaha digital amp. just a bit more expensive than the flextone but loads better. ok, 'only' 6 amp simulations but way better effect-handling. but the floor-board is expensive as hell again.

so ROEL, you think you can use any MIDI-controller? so maybe I go back to that 'spider' again... but that board would have to be really a LOT cheaper than the line6 thingie.

what about buying a home-stereo-speaker and -amplifier and plug them to my boss me8? i mean - the boss me8 doesn't sound that bad as a direct-box so maybe this could work... and that'd be a hell of a lot cheaper. ;-)

I looked at the spider just 5 minutes ago...

Whadda? It's a digital thingy and they put only four user programs in it??

Didn't really look at it, but this seems a entry level price thingy, about the same as a more expensive model, but some options left out. For example; four programmable channels?? Do they really mean that they just put in 4 user-programmable presets? That has to be a commercial decision. They only need to save a few bytes to keep a preset, which costs virtually nothing in such a design...

So, I wouldn't be too sure about MIDI support... But you should check it anyway. Look at the manuals on their website. If it has MIDI support, you can use any footcontroller... If the controller is just some switches and a jack (marshall type), it is a non digital controller, and you coul look at other brands and try these on the amp...

Hope this wasn't too confusing...

A guy who plays lead guitar for me has a Spider and it is a big piece of shit. So much so that I REFUSE to let him play it at my shows. That is in my top 5 worst amps of all times list. Might as well plug in a multi effects pedal into your PA, it's the same sound.

If you already have the effects you like, do yourself a favor and get a good tube amp. One of the small Fenders, like a Deluxe or a Pro would make your stuff sound better than it ever has.

roel: yes, 4 user settings... even with the 'flextone'. they just force you to buy that damn foot-controller.

h2h: hmmm... I almost forgot fender. I remember that small 15w-practice amp a friend of mine once bought. damn, even that little thing made your guts tremble. so the bigger ones may really be worth a look.
