Hi all , :) I'm new here.

Was wonder if anyone could give a word or two about which cakewalk i should be using as a beginner (seriously new starter)?

I'm pretty confused by the variety of products by cakewalk.
Currenlyly *more familiar* using Cool Edit Pro 2, and just downloaded Acid Pro 4, which seems pretty user-friendly. Noticed that many users prefer the cakewalk features more , just thought i give it a try.

Need to know of which Cakewalk product for newbies and still manage to churm out a piece of quality sound ?

Thanks for listening. Thanks for helping.

Right , on with the details :D

I'm recording a 5 piece band, 2 guitar , bass , drum , vocals . So basicly i need a program which provides multitracking. A built-in drum machine would come in handy too . Preferably with the EQ and Effects , mixing thingy simple enough to understand , i'll be most happy. Oh yea , would be very handy if it has a built-in recorder from line-in/mic in too .

Thanks

Not sure what you're trying to say there.

If you are going to be recording more than 2 tracks at a time, you're going to have to fork over some $$ for a pro-level multi input card.

When you say line-in/mic, it sounds like you are trying to do this with something like a SoundBlaster...

Haa .. yea i sorta had the idea that i would be recording from a SoundBlaster card when i eventually give up on which soundcard for pro recording to choose . I'm still not very sure of what to u guys mean when u say "record 2 tracks at a time" .

For now , i only record one track at a time , and do a multitracking on either CEP or Acid Pro . Why do a 2 track record when u can record one at a time ? Better track timing? easier on the brain and fingers? how do u record 2 tracks at one time ?
Meaning , guitar and bass? or vocals and backup ? I only know for drums it would be better to have more inputs so that u can have multiple mics at different positions . Care to explain please?

Yea , I've been getting alotta good card names ! Delta 44 (4in/4out) , Delta Dio (2in/2out , optical out) Audiophile 2 in/2outs , Creative Audigy series , Turtle Beach series . There're too many cards which have pros/cons . I'm really confused with all the huulaaboo. Can someone have a try at pointing to 'good' from the "bad" and also the pros and cons ? that would really help .

By meaning recording through INPUTS meaning the "record from soundcard" function which CEP has and ACID pro doesn't. Would really like to try out the infamous Cakewalk product . Could someone recommend one that is user"newbie"-friendly and yet able to give a a good result? There's too many products i'm not sure of which to choose and try out.

Thanks alot for bearing with my low-mentalityness.

Hi
What's your current computer spec and operating system? How much cash have you got?

Hi. :)

P3-667 128ram , hehee :D soundblaster vibra 128 . Yes i know i'll change that as soon as i have the cash. For the card or the program?

Good machine, I have exactly the same (but with 256mb)!
If you're recording a band and don't need software synths, consider a Guillemot ISIS for $80 second hand (8 audio ins) and Sonar 2 for whatever little it costs running W98ll. In fact, the Isis comes with some Emagic software and a manual though I've never bothered trying to learn it.

;-)

:)
Have any sites where i can check out the spects for Guilemont ISIS? (8 ins huh ?!!! cool!) :)

thanks again

also , how bout a word or two about delta 44 and audiophile ? a little help to clear up the haze would be greatly apreciated . The sound my music lies in your words. :D

Hi again

I found this review

http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/jun99/articles/guillemotisis.htm

which I remember reading years ago!

Now, bear in mind, you can't run it under anything above Windows ME, and you never will do. Guillemot stopped supporting it about 1 year ago.

BUT, it is rock solid and people don't seem to be able to sell them quick enough. Why? Because it can't run softsynths - the new holy grail - with a low enough latency on an uncool platform - W98ll. I only use outboard gear and I'm laughing! If you find one for sale, offer US50$ but go up to 80 and remember to get the software too.

M-Audio seems to suck from what I've read. Audiophile, I don't know.

PS. Cakewalk Home Studio looks to be a great software too.

Keep us posted!

Uh oh..

Home studio can only access one stereo input and output at a time.
So Sonar would be the one.

Hi :)

Thanks for the details Janic,

I'm running a W98 platform so i dont think we'll have any problem if i decide to have the Guillemot card * why is W98 uncool??!!*
Also , i dont really have any idea about MIDI and have no use for it , so i think Guillemot should work just fine for me .

One question , using my creative vibra 128 * yes.. go on.. laugh..*
i get a very unclear and far away sound , and if i try a little louder , the sound gets distorted . I plug the guitar into the line-in. Question is , after changing the soundcard , does it help the sound quality , or am i cursed to buy one of those too-expensive-for-me direct boxes or preamps ?

Oh , also , would like to know if Guillemot works well with other sound cards , because i'm planning to have 2 soundcards on my board. Very important.

Right , on with the software. Well , after 11 hours of waiting *56k* , i finally have my Sonar 2 XL . :D . Now, i'm confused if Sonar is mainly used for MIDI's , or Audio ?? Is it reccomended for a Non MIDI user to use Sonar ? also .. sonar isn't being very friendly on newbies ..

Thanks.

Lawrence

I've absolutely no idea!

You're plugging your electric guitar straight into the card? Well, it won't sound much good whatever card you're using. Now, here's an issue about the drivers and the latency with an older type card such as the isis that uses MME drivers. If you had a card which could run with WDM drivers and a low latency, you could plug into the computer directly and run a plug in effect, such as a guitar amp simulation and be able to hear the result in real time. In short, yes, you will need something like a Line 6 POD or Guitar Port:

Why not? Why do you need 2, btw?

Yeah, sure you can use Sonar without midi. This may help you getting going:

Keep at it!

Re: Hi again

M-Audio seems to suck from what I've read. Audiophile, I don't know.

That is a pretty ridiculous generalization. I have been using an Audiophile for about 6 months with no problems whatsoever. My experience with M-Audio has been very good and their support in terms of drivers has been top notch.

If you want to talk about audio interface manufacturers that suck start elsewhere. Creative Labs and Aardvark come to mind. Both companies left customers hanging by taking their sweet time releasing working WDM drivers for 2000 and XP with their respective products.

Whatever! But after reading of some people's experiences I wouldn't touch one.

Creative I hate. I once had one many years ago. Never again. Their support in Ireland was the rudest I've ever encountered. Seems funny now though believing you could get "unlimited" tracks out of a Pentium 100 on W95 and an AWE 32...

Hi all , again

I checked out some system hardware sites regarding the Guillemont Isis , sorry to say that most reviews aren't very happy with their product. It seems that Guillemont often causes lock up and have problems identifying into the system . Most reviewers couldn't get the plug-n-play feature , instead , 1 week of trial and error , another week of customer support . Not very convincing ..

I did too check out the Audiophile , looks pretty good with 2 in/2outs , and reasonable price . Reviews aren't that bad too *compared ti Guillemont's :D *

Is turtle beach santa cruz recommended for recording use ? I've check the specification at pcavtech site and the polls are pretty good for this card. Has an excellent signal to noise ratio . Is turtle beach cards suitable for recording? *price is very pretty too!*

Thanks for the quick replies ,

This thread has strayed far far away.. tehehe.

Whoops... :D i take back what i said about the Audiophile *sensative issue*

Well BG, you can lead a horse to water....

Only kidding! Good luck!

I started with cakewalk Pro Audio 9. It was pretty straight forward and had a good tutorial built in.
