Hope this doesn't come across as a double post. I'm in the process of rebuilding a p.c. and the updates are significant enough that I'm looking at a 64 bit capable board and cpu (intel). Hardware is pretty much picked out so now to the matter of which o.s.

Since I'm virtually building a new PC my old OEM 32 bit XP Pro isn't technically transferrable. I'm seeing 64 bit OEM versions of XP and Vista...XP about $100 cheaper. I don't hear much about 64 bit XP Pro but I'm wondering if it will be less problematic in terms of drivers and compatability than what I've heard with Vista. I just get the impression that Vista is still a bit dodgy....maybe I'm wrong.

2 Delta 1010 cards and SONAR 8 is the basis of my set up. Your thoughts and suggerstions welcome and greatly appreciated.

Peace, love and happiness to you all in the next year!

I've actually got a 64-bit xp-pro system. I've been less than impressed with its ability to deal with my hardware.

It can't boot up without the install disk in, and the only driver I could find for my M-audio 2496 was the beta version (so that was a pain.)

I haven't worked that extensively with Vista, so I'm not sure how bad that would be.

Thanks Steve,

That's what I was afraid of. All these lovely new super duper 64 bit processors but so little choices for software and drivers.

To be honest...I don't much of anything bout that osx86 thing. I probed the WWW for a few minutes...it sure looks um...experimental? I'm really not much in to hacking and poking at computers and drivers n such. I'm really just wanting to build a modern and reliable package.

Not discounting it but this is the first I've heard of it frankly. Thanks.

xp64 and vista64 are analogous to xp32 and vista32 so no, the driver situation wont be better on Vista64. Unless you have specific needs for huge amounts of memory for large sampler patches and have hardware and software validated for 64, I would say stick with 32 for now. There are plenty of ppl I know that work on vista64 and love it but if that is the direction you want to go in, be prepared to do a lot of reading and checking to ensure everything you want to use will place nice together.

Kinda the impression I've been getting...thanks gents...looks like 32 bit for me for at least the short term. I'll stay away from the i7 core and build a stout 32 bit machine with 64 possibilities.

Thanks!

why stay away from I7? It is the best chip/chipset on the market right now.. There are no "pure" or "made for 64bit" chips on the consumer market. They will do both OS versions equally well

Oh...guess I didn't know that. I thought that the i7 and the new motherboards were for 64 bit only. That changes things a bit.
