i've got a two channel tube mic pre and i'm wondering where to use it on the drum set. obviously the kick, snare and overheads are the 4 priority mics but which two would you guys go for? kick & snare or overheads?

thanks

If you only have 2 channels, try the overheads....it should capture the whole kit if done correctly. Then, maybe you can record a track micing the kick and snare, but that might not sinc correctly. If you cah do 4 tracks, tha would really help you.

What preamp are we talking about and what are your other preamp options? Also, what mics are you usning and how is the basic kit to mic setup?

me and my band are getting ready for a demo, first thing first--DRUMS
were gonna run compression on the kick and snare and the overheads are gonna go through a tube pre amp ive been told this is the way to go

If we were talkin about 25 years ago, this may be true. With analog recording compression was necessary to bury the noise floor of the tape. With modern digital running at 24 bit, using compression while recording makes no sense as you have a ton of headroom that was not in analog. Compression should only be used on mixdown for tracks that don't sit well in the mix or limiting a mix. The reason for using compression in the digital domain is a little different than in the analog domain.

a mic preamplifier is necessary to raise any mic level signal to line level. so i don't know what you mean. you've got 4 mics, you need four channels of mic preamplification.
