Where to put the $?

Okay, I'm in the process of moving my home studio to a newly built studio. I'll have a nice recording booth there and I'd like to get a good condenser mic to get some better sounding recordings (I have a Sennheiser e835 now and I ain't liking that sound). I usually just record vocals and acoustic guitar but maybe someday I'll get some horns and stuff, you never know.

But, the question is what should I get. I can check that mic from the Microfones section, but what should I get whit the mic?

I don't like my current set-up cause I have so few ins in my soundcard (Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum eX). So should I get a soundcard that has more ins and outs or should I get a mixer? Or should I stick with this set-up and get a preamp for the mic?
What's the word on those interfaces that you can hook up via USB or FireWire?

My ins are now used like this:
One 1/4'': I switch this between my mic, bass and guitar
One RCA: keyboard
A quick add-up, I'd need at least two stereo ins (1/4''), one XLR in (maybe preamped), three mono ins (1/4'')

When I move I'm going to add monitors to my setup so I will need a stereo out for them, and two headphone outs wouldn't hurt either.

If you got any advice I'd appreciate it.

I guess the question is, how much are you looking to spend? You'll find a lot of threads here if you look for them... all kinds of, best mic for x$, which soundcard etc...

That said, don't worry about horns right now, get a nice large diaphram condenser, maybe something by blue? (I'm not getting into a brand thing here, but mics are one area where you do get what you pay for, more or less) and get yourself a nice preamp single channel or dual, going into a computer interface with a decent AD converter.

Since your Q is general, what I'm trying to emphasize, is focus on getting a nice single channel into your computer, as it sounds like just doing guitar and voice can probably be done with a small setup, so don't worry about a mixer, worry about getting a 'small' setup with the best sound you can.

If you have a little more info to go, like budget, etc, maybe I can give you some more specifics.

on a second read, the firewire interfaces out now, might be perfect for you, if you're looking for simplicity, the yamaha o1x or the tascam fw/somethingorother are worth checking out... my personal preference would be the 896HD by motu, but only because I've never had a piece of motu hardware, ever give me stress.

Well the budget is pretty much tied to what I get from ASCAP in a few months. But maybe a rough estimate would be around 1k.

You should use the 1K to buy some monitors and/or a better soundcard, IMHO.
 
I got the Alesis Monitor One IIs.

Yeah, I think it's time to get a new soundcard. But would it be better to get a card that has the outs and ins and you have to get preamps and headphoneamps, or a card that has an interface, like M-Audio's Omni Studio, with all the amps ready?
