i have a couple of behringer stereo compressors/gates, i would like to mainly be able to use them as gates to cut out some of the noise, eliminating peaks and for mild compression. my setup is a mackie 1604 out of the channel inserts going to a delta 1010. i am a little uncertain how i should hook up these comps.

don't i want a compressor to be pretty much right after the preamp?

would i want to go to the channel insert to compressor then to the delta?

or is there a better location

insert out to compressor in, compressor out to delta in. That's if you want to compress/gate on the way in. If not, record the track as you normally would, route it to an unused output of the delta, delta out to comp in, comp out to delta in, and record the return to another track. Depending on the software/drivers there may be some latency unaccounted for in the D/A/D cycle, so you might have to visually line the compressed track with the original.
