Where is CE registration info kept on the HD?

I changed hard drives and now the CoolEdit program Cool Edit 2000 1.1 build 2418 [CE2000] says I'm on the 30 day trial. I paid for and have used the program for ages and don't know how to register it again. I don't know where the registration number is kept on the old HD nor how to load it into the software. The old harddrive is still on my computer so I can retrieve anything I want, but the CE program won't run from it anymore. Can I retrieve the registration number from the old HD somewhere, and load it into the new installation on the new HD?

Any help?

you could try re-installing the program onto the old hard drive just temporarily so that you can get the registration and all, if that hard drive still has some of the installation files you should be able to install it onto it without re-registering. not sure where the files are kept tough, i'd think it was stored in registry.

I don't have any experience with Cool Edit 2000, but the 2.0 and 2.1 versions of CEP required a "cep2.0_reg.exe" file to register. I understand that Adobe will help you register your old software, but again, I don't have any personal experience with it.

Ok, I'm giving this another try. I've located the serial number, but need to run ceregkey.exe to be able to enter it and my name. But when I run that program, it pauses just a moment (I suppose just to get my hope up!) and then nothing happens. Nothing. I searched AudioMasters and read the archives to find the info about needing to run ceregkey.exe. But I'm still stuck.

Any suggestions?

For future reference for others with the same problem, from Syntrillium Sep 12, 2002 8:38 am :

"Upon registration, you will receive a separate 'reg key' that will allow you to unlock the CE2K demo - this is performed outside of the program itself - not from within using the ENTER SERIAL NUMBER function; that is for registering plugins only...those detailed instructions will follow in the email from sales.
---Syntrillium, M.D."

And on Wed Nov 28, 2001 10:26 am : "...Then, you must locate your registration key file that was sent to you from the sales department (typically titled, ce2kreg.exe or ceregkey.exe). With all other apps closed, run this key, enter your name and serial number EXACTLY as they appeared in the sales confirmation email, and you'll be ready to go!

Don't know, man!

We don't usually go around cracking software. We just type in the key during the install, when it asks, and it works.

So, reinstall it fresh and follow the prompts.

Hurrah!!! After a year, I figured it out.

The reg key needs to be run. But when I ran ceregkey.exe nothing happened. After I made my post here a few minutes ago, I realized I had searched for and ran ceregkey.exe, but had not tried to find and run ce2kreg.exe, which is a key that Syntrillium said might be needed. After I did that, the "key" opened for me to enter my name and serial number. All is well!! A long wait to get to use a good program.

I will back everything up to disk, and document the problem and solution.
