Where does one go for better-than-beginner clarinets and saxs?

i don't play either of those instruments, but the majority of saxophonists in my band seem happy enough playing Yamaha saxophones, and i'd rate them as "beyond beginner", though our 'band leader' plays a Selmer (sp?) which is expensive, and sounds it

It becomes a matter of personal preference. Most sax players I know play Selmer, but LeBlanc and Yamaha are also used a lot.

There are several ways to determine which you prefer. The first of which is to play the various saxes and decide from that. That's also pretty much the only way to do it.

You can however ask around to sax players whose sound you like, or sax teachers at the local college.

Likewise, if there is a sax player whose albums you admire and whose sound you like, you could contact that person and find out what they play.

I know you're prob looking for the best deal, but I'd highly suggest buying an instrument from somewhere that you can actually play it.

I know that with Selmers, although they are very high quality, each individual sax of the same model sounds slightly different and can have a very different feel.
