20 years ago i had a keyboard (non-pro Yamaha), a four track Tascam recorder, a guitar, peddles, etc.

I would like to get a similar, reasonably priced set up with todays technology, nothing fancy. I don't know where to start now.

I would like a minimum of eight track recorder (preferably 10), preferably computer based, which I can plug in my new non-pro Yamaha keyboard into. It has drums on it and most of the sounds I require for keyboards. I still have a Telecaster guitar and was thinking of buying one of those amp-simulator guitar effects modules that I could plug into the computer. i will probably pick up a cheap bass as well.

Where do I start? What kind of recording equipment am I looking at and how much? I looked at pro-tools briefly, I have seen various Garageband types of software, but I honestly don't know what they do completely.

It would be nice to have some computer generated sound effects or even an ability to create loops with my guitar, but that isn't essential.

Any advice?

I use ACID for my DAW and have a Line 6 pedal that does effects, amp modeling, and works as an interface for my computer. ACID works really well for looping anything .Editing is a breeze when properly aligned to the track. You could try something like a Line 6 Toneport for an interface which should include Gearbox for effects/amp modeling. I'd also suggest searching through the 1756943624586093 other posts just like this one. Hope that helped some.

Another quick suggestion for you is to pick carefully where you post stuff like this on here. This specific forum is mostly reserved for equipment reviews and specific recommendations. Being as that was your first post, the "newbies" forum would be a much better place to post this. You are more likely to get more responses that way. That is also where you will find many similar posts you can scan through.

Thanks. I didn't see the newbie forum. Will get over there shortly.

You could start by getting a good soundcard: Echoaudio.com or m-audio.com has affordable ones that sounds good. As for software audacity is a free sowtware that could initiate you to computer recording.

Tascam US 144 is $120 and now comes with Cubase Lt Recording software.

USB cable..a snap.

something like 48 tracks, the pc editing function is great (large screen and more...click and paste and cut...), 24 bit. 96Khz...

for $120 for 48 tracks of 24/48-96K....automation, free plugins of compressors, eq, reverbs, delays, guitar amps and more.....

It's really hard to compete with the pc.imo.

I paid $1200 for a 4-track cassette recorder years ago!
