You have a great voice, man. Very smooth. It reminds me of Rufus Wainright.

As for where to go with the arrangement, it seems like you have a pretty solid start. The last part does seem tacked on, but it might be because of all the silence before it.

Good luck!

thanks...

I'm particularly interested in the arrangement/song structure. I can't think of what to add to this... should I make the guitar distorted electric and palm muted until the chorus? or what? Is the vocal tone good? Thanks. Btw, how IS the recording?

please do note, I did this in one take, this was my first try... it's just a demo. (apologies if it hurts your ears).

great start

I think you have something here. As far as arrangement, that is for you to decide. If you asked 100 different people you could get 100 dif answers. Now then, who is to say YOU are wrong? You wrote it, and recorded an arrangement. Lets call this a "working arrangement" As you develop it the song may evolve a little. A little tweak here and there untill you get it to the point where you are either happy with it, or sick of working with it.

Now, not that it matters but here is what I would do. The begining guitar remings me of a string section. I would use synth strings (unless you play violin or chello) and approach it the same way you did w/ the guitar. It is very choppy and you could have some sweeping strings in the background. I would bring the vocals out front and add an extra layer or 2 of vocal harmonys. I guess it kind of reminded me of the Beatles style, so I picture what I think they would do.

Good luck! I would be interested in what you do with this song.

..

I do know someone who plays violin and cello... so it is a possibility... unfortunately I can't write music... and I'm not sure what you had in mind for strings... how can you make them choppy with a bow?

I am having difficult finding places to add vocal harmonies as well.

Hmmm....
Very nice voice, and Tune!
i agree with the earlier remark about the strings...that would be a very nice touch and add warmth to the song.
in regards to a lead break with the guitar....clean. Clean and tight melodic lead, with the strings highlighting them.
At least that is what i hear in my head......

Or....something else!

Cool tune! Your style/voice remind me a lot of this young European guy Sondre Lerche who I saw touring with Jason Mraz (check out his music at www.sondrelerche.com). I really like the simplicity of the recording...I think it'd be perfect if you just re-recorded the guitar and you'd be golden!

Yeah, I'm with Tom Whitey on this. Except I heard Lou Reed in there - just goes to show. Mate you're asking for songwriting / arrangement input, which are creative decisions only you can make. If it were me, I'd come up with a middle 8 to bring a different slant to the message, I'd cut down on the repetitive ending (<3 minute songs are cool in my view) and I'd let the guitar and voice carry it. I'd vary the guitar a bit more and not be afraid of a little a capella - you have a lovely voice.

But that's only me - you would get as many different - and valid - opinions as there are subscribers to this bbs. The only thing I would say firmly is that you do have something good, worthy of more work. The first minute had me hooked, then it lost me.

thanks

I appreciate all this feedback. I'll see what I can do about adding some strings and maybe some vocal harmonies and a guitar solo. I'll also remove the ending. Personally, I don't like my voice that much, but I try my best. If you guys say I have something to work with though, I believe you. ;)

You need an EQ dip at 250Hz about -3db and a possilble high pass rolled off below 100-150 Hz. The guitar is very boomy and it covers your excellent vocal.

Regarding arrangement, you have verse, chorus, verse, chorus, pause, repeat tag line, many times.

You need a bridge after that 2nd chorus if your going down the path of v, c, v, c. The format screams for it. Then either a short solo at the end of the bridge or another v, c and then do your tag lines.

Instruments I hear are drums, a really funky gretsch guitar with some wah action. Yeah, I heard the Beatle sounding Eleanor Rigby strings back there somewhere.

hmm

I was thinking Verse Chorus Verse Chorus Guitar Solo Chorus. As far as arrangement goes... strings, perhaps a Gretsch guitar would be good... and then drums, warm bass, and some vocal harmonies (in the background, not with the melody... ah's or ooh's).

There is a Mark Knopfler tune that does a similar thing but he puts a twist on it. V, C, Guitar solo (which follows the vocal melody), V, C, Guitar Solo, Chorus.
