I'm here, just lurking.
I didn't catch any flame wars or misbehaving here. I don't know what Beck was upset about, or if he's quit.
I saw the Ghost... issue, but apparently his original moniker isn't banned! A clerical error or speed bump.
I try to catch new posts here daily. I hardly ever post. Just reading for entertainment. Most questions have already been answered & for others there may be no answer (without onsite inspection & troubleshooting).
I've refurbished & sold some nice gear (lots of Portastudios, tape decks, rackmount stuff and mixers) in the last couple years, but not recently. I've been meaning to put more stuff up on CL. I started a cover band with a guy about a year ago & we just picked up a drummer, so I've rearranged my family room as a live play, record & monitor space. I did some live-to-4 recording of our practice sessions last year (Tascam 34). Looking to do some live-to-8 sessions in the near future (Tascam 38). I still use the M30 mixer mostly, but may need to move to a bigger mixer to have more channels, TBD.
I'm ambivalent about a lot of gear I purchased years ago that realistically I don't have the capacity to use, as a part-time musician, tech & engineer,... a weekend warrior. It's a lot of gear to potentially sell, but for a large percentage of fixers in the lot which is another post altogether.
In the studio I use what's most convenient & fix things as necessary. I find simple things that work for me, then I'm a
set it and forget it type of person. I'm also putting effort into my musical craft and performance side of things more than recording or documenting everything all the time. I'm passionate about playing & recording, alike, but for however little I actually record I think the passion shows through the medium.
I'm also strongly of the opinion that I can dial in an optimal sound from virtually any equipment, large or small, so I don't spend much time on "what sounds better" debates. To a certain extent, the specs tell the story & the rest is subjective. I have a significant background as a technician. Home recording in earnest since 1980. I have very acute hearing. I've demo'd a lot of equipment we talk about here. I can give advice and take it. My way may be the best and easiest way for me, but it's not the "only" way. One can never know it all, and I'm reminded of that nearly every day. There's always an explanation or opinion posted here that I learn something new. For better or worse, a lot of learning about maintaining this equipment is in digging into the guts of it, preferably with a service manual and good set of tools (Plus plenty of time and patience).
Now that I've successfully made this thread all about me,...
