crap. great band, nice sound.

I noticed this in the beginning, but when the guitars went to the riff later on it wasn't as bad... it feels like there's too much seperation between the guitar and drums, they're just not blending the way I would like them to.

I know that's not really a concise critique, but because it stops being a problem later in the song, maybe you change something in the mix after the first verse?

but I agree with the other poster, the vocals are done really really well.

Which riff?
What time in the song does it occur so i have a reference?

49 seconds.... it's also much heavier in the hat there, so that might have something to do with it.

so - what's your thoughts on mars volta?

Finster! Wow, the arrangement has a grand scale... this could be the overture to a metal opera.

In the opening repeated 16ths the snare might be a little hot...wonder how a gradual crescendo for it would sound there, keeping the other levels the same but starting the snare off fairly quiet and building up to its current level at the end of the passage. Beyond that everything sounds distinct, full and well balanced, and the EQ balance of the mix sounds right to me. Vocals are especially good throughout IMO.

ok, i see what youre saying now, thanks.

And, the Mars Volta is on my "i need to listen to those guys" list.

But my lazy ass still has yet to hear them.

Maybe ill go pickup a cd on my break today.

Any album recommendations?

Jesus Christ, is that a human drummer? :p :p

The blast beats are super tight and that rolling beat is just insane!
Great stuff, I like the tone of everything.

Wish I could give some constructive criticism, but I just couldn't begin to!
Sounds awesome to me!

de-loused in the comatorium.

That's the one that's been on my regular rotation. It's the kind of stuff that's restored my faith in rock. If I could ever get past my jazz upbringing I'd kill to work with a project like those guys.

sounds good dude, always impressed with your sounds.
i'm not much of a fan of how the synth is blended around 00:40 or so. Maybe bring it out some more....or raise the volume as it climaxes. I like the drums at parts, and then at other parts I feel they could be bigger. Maybe some of it has to do with the player or the kit....but especially at the drum break at around 2:50, I feel like the drums should come back in and dominate. I don't know, just throwing out ideas here, I just got some weird compositional ideas that are running through my head that could fit here :D
Guitars sound great as well as the vox. There's a pop on one of your tracks at the end, fyi. I like the sorta swing drum section there at the beginning too.

What's the time signature on the chorus parts? It's like a 4/4 to a 3/4 to a 2 bars of 4/4??

Yes yes yes.
I still have yet to do any automation to the drums, so you are 100% correct there Ben.

As for the chorus, its 4/4.

But if you are refering to the Verse?

Its in 7/8.

Finster- pretty cool blend of styles. I like the Tool-ish vocals against the progressive flavored music. The guitars seem to really jump out around 3:04. I can't decide if its because they actually get louder or the guitars stick out better because the synth isn't mucking with their sound. Just something to maybe look into. I can hear everything pretty clear except maybe some of the stuff the keys/synth are doing. I can hear they are there but not really distinguish the parts if that makes sense?

And, the Mars Volta is on my "i need to listen to those guys" list.

Both full length albums are really good. My only real complaint with those guys is that they walk a fine line between jam band and prog. The material is really good IMHO but they have a tendency to ramble at times. I saw them live and the first song they opened with is 7 or 8 minutes long on the cd. They turned the same song into like a 24 minute song for the live performance. At any rate its worth checking out. Deloused is probably the easier of the two albums to get into but YMMV.

I need to eq and automate them a bit better then.
Thanks.

that's it, the verse...you got too many sections in this :p
so quarter note=eighth note in the 7/8 verse? hmmm, cool

Nice work Chris -

I think the vox could be a little more up front in the mix, and perhaps the harmony vox backed off a little more in relation to the main line where they both appear.

At 3:04 I'm struck by what a great guitar sound you've got there.

Your drummer... um... well he dosen't suck much, does he? :D

This remind me of a norwegian Black metal band called Borknagar, very clean and nice vox.
Its a bit on the heavy side for my taste, as I`m a big lover on prog.

I`m writing this as I listen and I heard some scream vox, very cool

Some parts of this also reminds me of a band called arcturus.

I have a very talented friend in this field of music, I`ll be sure to show him tune as I am impressed...

ps by the way the drums sounds very clinical and produced, wich is hats of for you if theire not programmed midi stuff, I dident read enough to see if they were.

any way all in all I think its exelent work and I have a lot to learn from you.

thumbs up
