ok ,as i have said in all threads, that it is just too incredulous to me how much prices have skyrocketed for musicians.but now i have a regular dayjob(yet still on a musician's budget)which ,somewhat affords me occasional equipment whereas before it was pulling teeth to buy replacement strings,or picks.anyway i for the longest time have been more of an old school type keys player,i am more comfortable with the hohner clavinet, the old wurlitzer, and the hammond action,as opposed to all the new touch sensitive,or weighted keys.well actually i like weighted keys.butanyway, the last time i purchased a hammond organ was about 1996 on a sidewalk sale in san fransisco, this guy had 3 perfect condition b-3's!!i saw them on the sidewalk about two blocks away and ran to him.when asking the price,i was shocked that, well at the time ,tonewheel organs in s.f. were just starting to make a comeback, yet you wouldn't know it,i just assumed i would have to borrow a couple hundred bucks, from a friend, but the guy asked me how much i would pay!!i said i could scrounge up 128$,he would take it.i got a beautiful brand new b-3 for 128$.never mind i had no place to put it,it;'s never 'til after you think about these things, that you really regret your actions.i am in philly now i sold the b-3 for the price i paid for it to the guy that was letting me keep it in his studio.as of the last year,i have been just trying to price a simple keyboard with drawbars,i knew that roland was one company that had been making these for sometime.i had once seen one usedf for 150$ in a friend's store.imagine my surprise when i found out that the cheapest these things run for is an easy $1000!!!and they aren't even real organs!!what,do they charge an extra $500 to have the drawbars?i can't even find one used for less than $900!!!what's up? is it just a given?are keyboard plyers considered the bourgoise class as far as purchasing power?ok ,i been playing piuano longer than i been walking.but when i turned teenager,i thought it was cool to play electric guitar(people like devo, and gary newman, were keyboard synth players, and i was notquite hip enough to see the humor, the irony,i was like into the loud zeppelin/who thing)plus, guitar was so much more compact than keys,it's not the instrument you think of bringing to a teenage kegger 'round the bonfire,so blah blah,as i always ramble,i always thought keys were impractical.as i got older started really apreaciating bands with the keys and started re-teaching myself, and getting towards the old memphis/chicago,piano banger players.so blah blah, further on with my incessant ramblings, i want all those keybords i used to own!!!man,i can really whine!!I AM SUCH A WHINER!!!well ,i got thehome studio, but i want at least something i can perform with at shows.anybody know where am i gonna find something within reason?i know that the oberheim makes a fake b-3 its like called an ob-3,that still runs about $ 850!!!is there a company out there???hey i don't want a miracle(maybe i do)i just want some organ sound that i can manipulate and manuever, somewhat to almost sound like an organ.i know about these seperate drawbars, that looked like a new hope ,but hey they cost $650 used!!!!i know all about these new rotary speaker emulators and these tone wheel computer simulations, but all this money on all seperate simulations add up to the cost of the new hammond!!any body got an organ they need to unload?CHEAP?

As I understand it the best Imitation B3 is a Korg unit. Can't remember it's name but it has drawbars. All the best guys use them here but they are scare as hens teeth. Other then that i understand there is a Virtual organ called a B4 which is highly praised. :)

Youre not going to find ant B3 alike for under $800.
Unless you find some body who has NO!! understanding about the B3 he owns like this guy who sold for $128.
If you had a keyboard that reads samples, You could buy a sample Cd of B3's and
use that for the fraction of the cost.
EMU has a new module that has B3 sounds only. It's a killer !!. Maybe with a cheap controller KB, you can work with it.

Did you know that the french used harpsicords as fire wood 100 years ago, while today people would pay more then $15,000 for one of them ?.

actually i do own a harpsichord that was a kit,but it needs to be tuned every 5 minutes, not a practical instrument.ok and you were talking about a good controller,do they make them with a joystick, that when it's all set up that the joystick can be used as a leslie switch doing the rotary speaker fast and slow?i saw a nice keyboard that you can get a realistic leslie sound with the joystick.is this now the norm?now that when your hammond sound is on the controller,it automatically configures the joystick/ribbon controller to have that function?ok now john sayers, this korg that you speak of,is this the fairly new one?because i just looked into the new musician's friend catalog, and lo-and-behold,front page,a new tone wheel keyboard by korg!!and the price??more devastating than the actual hammond!!!buuu---uutt,the features sound incredible!!is this the one?or does korg have an older model that i should research and be lucky enough to find used??oh boy, this is TOUGH!!i am gonna get my tax return for 2000 asap direct deposit from the irs,and take that and go on a buying frenzy, man!!!i know that i was gonna use the large amount of the sum for a computer studio, and the rest.........i guess i will try to get the roland or hey even theee hammond, but, used, but shheeeeesh,i wanted to get a guitar, anice mic, anice pre amp ,all this stufff, then ooops,i am not making that much of a tax return.oh well as it stands i am gonna get the organ after the computer.because ,the band i finally put together,i can totally up the quality by introducing the killer organ sound, and for recording,i am gonna way over do it put the organ on every frigging song ,yeeeeeaaaaahhhh.anyWAY,let me know what's up w/ all my questions ,and whta i should already know, and and and,thanks.--john

You'll never have enough money for the organ if you keep spending it on meth. ;)

You need to take lessons on how to post from Monty.

ummm,ok?stopped doing drugs a long time ago,esp.meth,ugggghh

seems like we keep rowing in the same boat because I was just about to ask the same question in here. I too was questioning why keyboards were so expensive. I think that unless I find something else used I will try to save for a Roland VK7. They have one of those at my church and it has great sounds.
Man, the luck...if only I could find a real B3 for so cheap, I even have the room! Just not my luck

You might wanna spit in my face

but I'd recommend the Native instruements B4 Hammond Virtual Intstrument - it can work in standalone mode on a PC or in any VST compatible sequencer (such as cubase). And it's not very expensive (in fact you can get it for free if you look hard enough (or ask the right person). The sound is so close it's unbearable!!

so tl,are you saying if i get a midi controllor w/a joystick,i can do the virtual hammond?i don't need a computer yet?because i won't have one for a few months.but you know what it is about the real organ i do like is the real time manipulation of the drawbars.that is the one thing that is so crucial in my organ playing,in gfact i feel that playing a real organm is such an art form, that playing the notes and what the actual song is by notation,is only half the performance, you gotta kind of tune your mind to all the functions ,like flipping the switch for the leslie, slow it down, speed it up put the brakes on,and then constantly work the draw bars shifting the tone all the time, this really ,for me,makes each song climax and crescendo, just by working the hammond.

oh yeah,hard2hear,it's getting creepy ,it's like we are in a parallel universe, working on the same plane of music.i had rented that roland organ you speak of.i love irt!!but, the price is even more expensive than the newer compact hammond.i went to digibid, and a few other sites(forgot the name)but nothing as of present, the prices looked good though, for vintage keys, they had a rhoades 73 for $250!!!so,i imagine that a used roland would be under $700,which,is what i wouyld have never planned on spending, but, when they all go for a cool $1500,half seems at least livable.we just won't eat for a few months.have you tried the oberheimer ob3?that's the cheapest.let me know if you find a good store or better used prices.good luck

A little unsure

but, I do beleive you would be able to control the B4's controls via a midi controler. Joystick...I'm unsure on that one.

You could use a variety of different midi controlers though whilst using the controller keyboard of your choice.

It may end up being quite flexible!

Here's the URL to the product page where you'll find a few demo's - there is a guy there doing a demo of the B4 being used live, this could give you an idea of it's practicallity!

Would you like some cheese with your Whine?

The new Organ that Roland is making with drawbars is a really decent unit.
Sounds like you need a better job, or go back to school and get an education if you havent already TO get a better paying job. Thats what I did....hell, just SAVE like most people do !!!!!

no i am just really CHEAP!!!!plus the one thing i do better than play music is whine!!!!!!!!!!!!save up?what a concept!!!better job?hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......................

LOL too funny.
NO kidding, I went back to school, became an aircraft mechanic 4 years ago. I make $45000 a year between working F/T as a aircraft mech, and my recording studio part time.
My wife works at an airline herself, and she makes just under $40,000 herself. Im able to save $500.00 a month for myself, meaning my studio. ITS CALLED S A V E M A N !!!

Im only 26, and my wife is 25.

Later,
Mike

Cheers for the holidays yall !!!
