Hi guys,

As posted elsewhere, this is my first recording/mixing mastering attempt so any comments, feedback and tips are welcome.
I've already incorporated some feedback from SouthSIDE_Glen (thanks!) which have definitely improved the track overall.

I'm using Logic 8 Express for recording and mixing, and Ozone 4 to add a little sheen and a bit of impact.

When You Fall mp3

Cheers,

Jim

Very nice song, man!
Voice and harmonies are great. I would melt the voice more into the mix using maybe a room reverb, it sounds very dry and too in front. Very good musicianship all round. Drums sound a bit too mechanical. Good work overall.

Joey :):):):)

nicee musicianship. i love the song itself, and the vocals are very nice too.

the only things i think can use improving:
- the vocals sound like they're not a part of the song. add more echo/reverb/delay etc.. and give them some distance!!

- the drums could be louder, they are afterall a source of energy in a song.

- for the ending, i personally think it'd sound better if you had the intstruments hold their notes out and fade away naturally.

hope these help!

Bring the drums more to the front. Love the vocal sound. Mind sharing your chain?

I've got to disagree with the suggestions for adding reverb. I like it the way it is. However, I can hear the room or very short slapback during the quieter parts. I think the vocals are a tad too prominent during the intro. Pull them back until the song gets going, then bring them to their current level.

Also, I think you should let the tail go all the way to end. You faded out too quickly at the very end.

Very nice song. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the kind words and suggestions guys!

I'll definitely try bringing the drums up a little bit, the vocal down at the start, and sort out the fade at the end.

Amazingly simple really :) On the hardware side it's just an SE Electronics SE3600 mic straight into a Mackie Onyx Satellite interface, straight into my MacBook Pro.
Then in Logic I just use the standard compressor, EQ and GoldVerb.

Yes, unfortunately it was recorded in my bedroom which does have quite a prominent short reverb to it.

Showcases a coveted voice.
Just a bit of arrangement and you've got a real pro sounding sound.
Ezdrum Kick could use a touch of low freq boost and compression with fast attack and average release and a little verb I reckon. Snare needs more snap.
Agree to intro the vocal quieter until 0:39.

The voice is too upfront for me. I'd back it off a bit and get it to sit more in the music... Great song though so mixing is secondary.....

Jim Cross,

when you are ready, where will this song be available for purchase or download? I really like it. I want it for my ipod. I want to sing harmonies with this song. (in my own little corner of the world.)

The ending could be longer for me, too. The beginning is a little too bold for me. I wouldn't know exactly how to do it, but it feels like it needs to be built up from a very quiet place - sort of introspective, and then making up its mind to the chorus - that you'll be there. Overall, it's a moving piece that I want to hear again.

Thanks for sharing, and, please, let me know when you are ready to sell this song to people like me!

Thanks! It's really nice to hear so many positive comments about the song writing and musicianship.
I think the plan is for us to get 5 tracks ready, then get them up on iTunes. That's one nearly done, two others just need mixing and mastering, and we've just started recording the fourth one (I'm struggling to get the right inspiration for the guitar part for that one). Will let you know when they're available!

Agreed, this song is really good. I'm listening on laptop speakers and I'm a super beginner so I'm not even going to attempt to critique anything, but it sounds really good here. Kudos.

Wow, I started this thread a long time ago!
Finally, after a hell of a lot of hard work and time, as well as far too many distractions, our EP is now up on iTunes, and this song is on there (very thoroughly reworked!)
It's amazing how much you learn over the course of a process like this, and I still feel like I'm very much at the beginning of the learning phase.

Anyway, if anyone fancies listening to the finished EP, which was all recorded, mixed and mastered at home, you can find it on iTunes here
