I was having very slow internet issue lately, and as I started delving into this abyss of software "protectionism" I realized I have so many programs protecting me I can longer even access the internet.

It seems everyone has one these days. Which is the best and how to turn off the rest ....blahblahbalh

My next post will be about toolbars growing so complicated it fills up 50% of my viewing screen...

hmm? mac....never owned a mac.

will check out CL for a internet surfer laptop of the mac kind..

Well, really you only need one protection program. I'd recommend either Avast or AVG! Just delete everything else via "Computer-->Uninstall/Change a Program" and go through the list!

It's for your own good. Symantec knows what's best for CoolCat..:laughings:

You should be able to config whatever you're using easily enough to not be problematic, but yes, I know where you're coming from.

My personal pet hate is the constant need to update everything, thus swallowing up all your bandwith "allowance"... Apple, I'm looking at you in particular...

Just use noscript with firefox and don't run executable files from the web. If you don't let scripts or programs run.....no malicious scripts or programs will be running on your computer. Crazy how that works.

I haven't had a resident virus scanner in about 5-6 years. I boot into Linux and scan my windows drives with clamwin and avg for viruses, and run a rootkit and spyware scan about twice a year, never had anything show up....ever.

Self-control > paranoia.

in between rebooting my modem and 802.1 wirelss router, turning off the toolbar "add-on's" has worked.
are they still running in the background eating up pc energy, IDFK...?

Cable sevrer here , a Time-Warner conglomerate, offered a full suite of Protectionism Everything fo FREE, so I downloaded this and I think its gotten worse.

I will go to my CP and UNinstall and Delete what I can.... or wipe everything out again and just load up Wndows 7.

Found Free Time Warner CA security site suite, was totally filtering, scanning and verifying every time I clicked on anything. I could easily tell because it also installed a huge obnoxious tool bar that showed me it was verifying......verifying....werifying....verifyingg......

good news is turning off the barrage of toolbars from Ask, CA, to Yahoo, to google to ie, to pornworld, to walmart toolbars has helped, i think. are they running in the background? IDFK..... but at least I'm down to only two toolbars and my screen is ok size.

thanks for suggestions.... I think Apple maybe? never owned one.
