When do you use the middle pick up?

saw Bonnie Raitt one night and it sure looked like she was using the middle pickup on that old brown Strat of hers.

I really should check it out more often, but I'm pretty addicted to the neck pickup. My strat has pretty strong magnets to so I have the middle one pretty low against the pick gaurd to minimize the pull on the strings.

Hmmm, never gave it much thought since I usually play some sort of acoustic but I tend to only use 3,4 and 5, or is it 1,2 and 3? Whichever it is, I use just the neck and middle pickups.
