What's your opinion on the AKG C 1000 S Condenser microphone?

Instead of purchasing a new microphone, I was thinking about using my Dad's AKG. It'd save me a lot of money. I've seen the microphone go for around 270 nowadays, which is cheap. I've tried it a few times and there's no static at all; it sounds crystal-clear which is, of course, impressive for a microphone of it's price range.

So, what's your opinion on the microphone? Should I keep it or purchase another one? If so, which should I purchase? (My price range being from $1-450).

Thanks! :)

I think its a miss for AKG...ive heard it on a few things and its not the worst mic in that line...but didnt seem flattering at all...you might consider selling it if that is an option.

That's my live vocal mic.
I've been using it for ten years and it rocks.
I don't use it for recording though.
It would probably be great for instruments in that setting but side address mics in general are more suited for vocals.
The only reason I don't use it for instruments is that I choose to keep my live and recording gear, separate.

I'm pretty sure Marik is modifying those now - worth considering.

As a follow-up to the big Tape-Op published SDC shootout, Mike Jasper tried a modded one - he posted the results to a website (he posted the link here recently, but I don't have it - I'm sure searching here would work) - sounded pretty darn good to me

I've seen a lot of hate for this mic around this board. I own a pair of them, and have had great results using them on an acoustic guitar, but to be fair I haven't really gotten to experiment with any other pairs of SDCs.

What are you looking to record with it?

Well, I'd like to use it primarily with vocals in my studio. Well, I don't believe selling it would be an option. To me, it sounded reasonable.

:o

Admittedly, past a certain threshold, if you can't get a decent recording of a vocal with any condensor mic, it's probably not the fault of the mic.

That said, any SDC wouldn't be my first choice for recording vocals...

Oh, I see. I understand the difference between a condenser and a dynamic now, thanks! Do you have any recommendations on microphones? I was looking at the Shure SM7B. Let me know if this is a good buy:

i have 3 of the c1000's here... my go to mic for anything???? no... but i got them real cheap and ya never no when an extra one can be handy... you couldn't pay me to use one for vocals... live or studio... that sm7 is a great mic for any mic closet...

I've used them for overheads: Meh.

Acoustic Guitar: Pretty good.

I've tried them on vocals.

Don't.

What did the engineers at AKG design this for anyway???...and while we are at it you could also explain that c3000b as well...lol.

I think they might have wanted to sell a stepping stone for Home reccers to get thier first $400 so after some time with it they will upgrade to a C414 or something. smells like a marketing thing to me.

Absolutely! They're playing on inexperience! The C1000 has a similar look to to a C12. I had a couple guys take me into their studio expecting me to be impressed by their C1000's on drum overheads. My response was "ouch". Well, it'll work. It depends on which C3000 you're talking about (the B notation makes me wonder). I had one A that worked pretty well. We had to process the hell out if, of course but so did the other mics we tried and that had the least problems.

AKG has gone the way of the new Neumann (Sennheiser). The don't give a crap about making mics on par with the level of mics that made them famous. They seem to think you can get by on name alone and crappy desgns, and all the sycophants just follow along.
