I was in the local music store and heard the YSM1i's... I was impressed.... I also recently heard them in another studio, and was equally impressed...

I went out and bought a pair last week, and brought them home.... Well frankly they are useless to my ears. Either im just used to my NS10's or something, but I just can't mix with them!......

They don't seem very true to me..... I feel that they are colouring the sound too much...

My NS10's are harsh to listen to, but very true, and I love mixing with them.....

This is my mileage, whats your opinions?

Joe

The purpose of monitors is to be able to get a good mix...if you cant get a good mix with the YSM-1's, then they are the wrong monitor FOR YOU......then again, the experience of mixing shouldnt be as harsh as NS10's......Id keep looking if I were you....

Yo Vender of Voxes:

I have a pair of YSM 1's and I dig them. I don't even turn on my other pair of speakers, Infinity Speakers, because the YSM's are so much better; not LOUD, BUT CLEAR.

Now, here is the juxtaposition factor: what do you use to feed the signal into the YSM's?

Could be your feed/amp/integrated amp, is faulty?

What was feeding the system when you auditioned it in the store?

Could be you need to check your gear; maybe your gear does better with the other speakers?

Anything is possible but good gear and cables and amps, etc., can make or break a pair of monitors.

Try using Mackie speakers powered by Radio Shack amps?

Not a good situation.

Keep listening,

GREENY...It's not a power problem, it's the fact that I don't like the sound.

And If it's clashing with any of my gear, which I doubt, they are still going back, cause Im not changing any gear:)

But for the sake of info, Im using a NAD power amp (Im not sure of the model number, but it was about $1500......... Straight out of my mackie 32/8... (from the MON OUT L + R)

Thanks for your suggestions Hornet...:)

GIDGE,
What you said is very true, But about the harshness....It's not a problem, my ears have a hole burned in the middle of them in the shape of the NS10 :), I am so used to them and have come to love them.......... It's not a fact that Im really looking, like honestly I LOVE my NS10's, But If I do hear something cool, im open for trying it... (like I did with the YSM's)......

They stopped making the NS 10's, so im just keeping an ear out for the future..... eventually, im gonna spill coffee on them, or blow them up, and then HAVE to go out and find some new monitors.

Thanks Gidge.

Well, I'm pretty impressed with my YSM-1's so far. In terms of clarity and imaging I'm really impressed. However, I have had a little trouble getting my mixes to translate in terms of the lower frequencies (below about 200Hz). Although it could have a lot to do with my room, since there is zero treatment and I very easily could have standing wave issues. In general I do like the way they sound though. They don't tax my ears too much.

I doubt they'd make the Apples in Stereo sound any better though.:) :)

I totally agree!

Afterall, it's hard to improve an already awesome band!...:D

Yo Music in a VOX:]

You said, NAD!! I've had bad luck with NAD. A few years back I bought a NAD tuner -- right out of the box, it was defective.

More recently, I bought a NAD amp for my studio; it was defective right out of the box.

Then, I got the Yamaha integrated amp -- no problems.

Sorry the YSM's don't fit your ears but that's why they make many speakers.

I just can't get over the price for the YSM's vs. the quality of the little boxes.

Hey, man, yell FORE before!

Hey, Horny Greener.......:D

I 've always used NAD, and had great luck with them, same with a friend of mine......But, I guess you can encounter problems with anything.... hell, My Mackie 32/8....($7500 CAN).. had to go back to mackie twice, within the first month of owning it... finally they broke down and sent me a new one that actually worked...

Ysm's??
Price VS Quality... hell ya!... they are an awesome deal.... no disputing that.. and they don't sound aweful to me... but I just can't mix on them..

Just out of pure curiousity........
Why are you using and integrated amp?..... You should just use a power amp..... Your sending your mixes, through 2 sets of pre-amps, and risk colouring the sound... I did it for years though, and it was ok... but now I just use power amps. I find it is a cleaner sound....(slightly)...

Hey Joe!

Just keep the search on dude... many people are fond of JBLs (with good reason, since they are good monitors), but there's not one flavour of JBL monitor I've ever heard (and I *haven't* heard them all) that I've ever liked, they all sound harsh and grainy to me...

I know it's my ears and the way I perceive sound... just proof of the subjective nature of monitor selection!

BTW - why not check out the ones Ed mentioned a while back? Or my faves - the Meyer HD-1s!

Wow, thats like $500 Canadian... Damn Good deal!!!!

But.......NOPE!:D

Like I mentioned in an earlier post above.... that sooner or later I will spill coffee on them or blow them up.....

Then I will sell them to you, for $450 EA. US:D

....And if you want the Kleenex thats taped over my tweeters, thats extra!!!!;)

Yo Voxy One:

AHA! You want to know WHY I'm using an integrated amp? Well, one feature of this Yamaha is a CLEAR THROUGH switch; push it in and it bypasses all coloring of the Yam amp. Cool, huh?

Also, the integrated amp has plugs for my two tape decks; I can record on either and from either one to the other. Also, the amp has plugs for my CD player, AM/FM, [which I don't use] an AUX plug and it supports two sets of speakers which I have.

In addition, it plugs in my wax turntable -- which I do use once in a while. So, all in all, it suits my studio set-up. But, change is coming.

I'm going to get a CD burner and, later, a new digital recorder that runs at the 24 bit so I can get "better" sound.

I'm kind of waiting for a unit that will do CD and record and is easy to run. [I may have a long wait.]

Enjoy summer and LeBatts

Hey Green///:D

Yeah, that makes sense about the amps...... I have a NAD reciever, (that I use in my living room as my home stereo)
And if I have the bass and treble, on flat, and press the eq bypass button.. I don't hear a difference... so the Colouring would be minimal, even if you weren't using that "clear through" button....

Cool Bro!....
