I have a hard time seeing myself alive w/o my 2 oktava MC012s.

Meshuggah, nice to see a swede, I'm from Gävle myself, not so far away from you. A question, are you in Meshuggah or just a fan. Anyway, I love the band.

Agree with you about the MC012s, worked with them before and will now by at least one. A very nice high hat mic.

But..

The Lomo 19a19 is maybe the best allround mic I ever tested. Have'nt heard them all but I've tried and even A-B tested Neumans, Microtech Gefells and other high end ones and less expensive dynamic ones "against" it.

It has a clearity seldom heard, and a "sound" too. It could be for a voice, acoustic instruments or cymbals or even a distorted guitar speaker. Always doing a superb job. That's my choice.

SM-57 for Shure, I mean sure. But I just got a SP C1 yesterday, via Fedex, (A day late :mad: ) and I'm like a kid with a new toy.
But for right now I'll say SM-57 for Shure, .....I mean sure.:D

My favorite vocal microphone for under $100 is the Sennheiser e835. It sounds (almost) like a condenser because it's very clear and clean. I also just acquired
an EV Cobalt C09 that's well suited for rock style vocals (accentuated mid range)
for about $75 bucks new at Guitar Center-it has better high end response than a
Shure SM58 (C09 goes up to 18KHZ).
 
I grab my 797 Audio CR998 for vocals or acoustic guitar because it's the only condensor I have. When I'm just recording ideas I use a Shure 545-SD (similar to an SM57) because it's always plugged in and ready to go.
 
Hey chessparov, right on about the Sennheiser e835. I have two of them and use them for stereo micing. They are very clear and are also great for live use.

Overall, the all-purpose condenser mic I use the most is a CAD C400S. These are almost bullet proof. I heard that they aren't made any more.
 
I guess I forgot to post before. Oh well.

My favorites are my 57s because I'm just starting out and I depend on them.
 
I'd probably reach for any well-made LD Condensor. The Shure KSM-44 is great in my opinion, and I'd say a steal even at $600 or so street. The Neumann TLM-103s are nice too, but you get three patterns and bass roll off and db pad with the Shures, yet the 103s are more expensive. But the KSM44s also have a bit of a treble/presence boost that can sound harsh on certain things. Still an all around good "desert island mic" IMHO.

Those are both fairly pricey though...you simply can't beat an SM-57 for what it is. That mic will be made until the end of time itself lol...and for good reason.

By the way, hello to AlexHerd...fellow Pittsburgher, fellow BBS Newbie. Ever been to Piano's n' Stuff music AlexHerd? My favorite recording shop in the area, lol.

Aside from the silly poll, you have asked a tough one. What is your favorite hammer that just makes your blood flow? Why, I've got an old hacksaw that does it for me...
I try not to get too attached to gear (OK, guitars are different)
and it's really hard for me to get weepy over a collection of components, no matter how artistically assembled. If I'm cutting and running, I'll take the KIWI! But you have asked a more subtle question- what mic speaks to my heart, the old friend? I spent 6 years doing The Who, and that means mics get "special" treatment, the kind that makes engooneers cringe. Heh. I'd have to say AKG D690, my alternative to a 58. Even Roger Daltrey antics couldn't kill it- much.-Richie

1. General purpose LD condenser - Studio Projects C3
2. Small diaphragm condenser - Neumann KM84
3. Dynamic - Shure SM57... of course!

Okay, so I cheated!!
 
SM57

I'm not gonna bash shure or anything. I really love the sound I get from their products (the SM57 is great for the price). However, I have had two 57's just stop working on me in the past two years. One was approx. 3-4 years old and the other was about 2 years old (both past warranty). Kinda pissed me off, because I'm always hearing about the durability of the 57's.

My favorite mic is the Shure KSM44 - I've been using it to record practices. Just put it in the center of the room and do a direct line of vocals to a multi-tracker for more control. Decent sound & real easy.
 
I vote niether! Can't you add another choice for guys like me?

AT 4033. I'm actually thinking of selling all my other mics, except the 57, and just using the 4033. It sounds better than all these crispy Chinese MXL's.
 
If I were issued the challenge of recording a group using one type of mic exclusively for everything on the recording,I would opt for Sennheiser md-421's. They have got to be the most rugged and versatile mics I have ever used.I have a pair and have used them on just about anything and everything and got acceptable or better results.About the only thing I can think of I tried it on and just couldn't get it to work on was a banjo,and who cares about a banjo anyway?
