What's your "goal" cover song?

A C chord (and I almost have D mastered):D

Actually, I can barely play a standard B. For some reason, my fingers just have never wanted to do that. :(

If I learn anything successfully, that'll take me up to the next level. :o

When I was 16 I played "The Clap" in concert. Fortunately I didn't contract it

After that I worked on the Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1, but I didn't get too far, especially with the fugues. The preludes are more playable :o

Now I don't have any goals, I just play what I feel

I like you, but I hate you.

I won't live long enough to learn to play The Clap.

Mood For A Day, now that would be nice.

and in a completely different vein, 'Classical Gas.' I'll probably have an easier time with that than 'Lazy.'

I tried learning that over a year ago, and gave up as soon as he got into the really fast chord changes. I just started learning it again and took more time with it, and while it is a difficult piece to play, I've found it's not nearly as difficult as how it sounds/looks on tab.

Here's the tab I'm using:

so true. things look so much harder when you see the numbers, its so overwhelming.

i find my fingers remember everything, not my brain.

Robert Johnson's blues material is basically uncoverable.

However, I am trying to find me a crossroads.

Eh, mostly working on my own material at the moment, but on the side I'm practicing a few Satriani and Vaughan solos to keep my chops up, and lately I've been playing through the "Joe Pass Guitar Chords" book partly as just fingering excersizes (some of those bars feel very unnatural to me) and partly to expand my chord vocabulary a bit. Great stuff...

"Dark Eye Tango" from Al DiMeola's Casino disk. Got parts of it... most of the time... on good days. :D

I'm not a guitar player, but I'd love to be able to play "Hear my Train a-Coming" the way Jimi does sitting on a stool with a 12-string.

...In My Life by the Beatles.

I know, its ridiculously simple, but I am also very lazy when it comes to learning covers, as I spend most of my time either at work, or doing other things. I very rarely sit down to learn the actual melody+guitar to any song, and the tab for this song doesn't even give anywhere near close to the right chords, let alone how to play it intricately.

The Beatles for Solo Guitar book version also sucks. I'll find time to play a nice version some day

Fade To Black, for very personal reasons.

Problem is, I absolutely refuse to play that song until I know every single note to the point of playing it naturally with my eyes closed.

THEN, i 'might' bring it up in practice with the rest of the band.... when I feel that THEY can play it, at nothing less than perfect.

If they don't..... then I'm going hostile.

I literally just started learning how to play lead, so I got one heck of an up hill battle going on. I've gone over tons of material, and I think the only thing I can do at this point is practice practice practice, anything, and everything.

It's hard to practice leads from free tabs on the net, as usually stuff is just terrible. Luckily, I do have a few books laying around that I paid for (cherry lane music).

I'm not a big cover person. Once you master it, it's really just a series of linear seams.

Now if you had mentioned quilts...

Seriously, since I've been an adult, no matter how much I've mastered a solo, etc., I always end up thinking - So what? If I was the guy that actually came up with that, that would be something. But I just practiced long enough to eventually duplicate something that that person came up with on their own.

I vote for a good/reasonable/original performance over a cover any day.

I played both in the same show :D

But I don't remember them anymore. Just bits and pieces. I remember a little more of Mood, plus Mood is a lot easier to play. But the Clap is more fun, bringing out the middle voices is a challenge.

I probably couldn't play the Clap now even if I had the sheet in front of me. I practiced like a mad demon before that concert. Literally I would come home from school and practice until I went to bed, for nearly a month. Two weeks before the show, my callouses blistered. I taped up my fingers and kept practicing! I changed the strings before the show because of the blood . . .

Yeah, I don't think I'm up for that anymore :o After that I pretty much stuck to nylon strings . . .

I have to agree with notCardio about B!
I love to be able to play bass & guitar for Love Will Tear Us Apart or Parents by Budgie.
I played in a covers band or two &, I'm sorry to have to admit, I had to use a chord chart taped to the top of my amp for almost every gig - memory like a thingumiejig.
Jimi's version of Hear My Train A callin' - the version he stuffs up or the one he gets all the way through? They are night and day - but both beautiful. He certainly had a way with the blues.
