What's your Favorite Vocal Mic? Why?

Actually my first mic was really crappy.

I made it myself with a can and a string tied through a hole in the bottom.

If you listened closely, the vocal was almost distinguishable, but not intelligible.

But I was only five then...it was my first design...a prototype.

I got a Neumann U89 years ago for a very cheap price (studio buddy was on the verge of getting evicted).

I'm told it's an inferior version of the U87, but I loooooove it.

Next vocal mic I get will be an SM-7

Well so far my favorite is a Mojave M200, Beautiful mic even without any real mixing.

I'm going to be trying an AT4040 and MXL Genesis soon though, so maybe it'll change my thoughts!

(Other mics i've worked with: MXL 990, AKG 414)

Todd...I wouldnt call the 89 an inferior version of an 87. Its a bit different and was designed for a different purpose. It has a higher spl rating and two more patterns. With them being hypercardioid and wide angle cardioid, its purpose is more of a mic to use in large scale recording environments. Its a little smaller and lighter than an 87... I assume because they would be used on booms extended a ways out(film booms etc) and it has that linear high-pass filter setting so it cant be overloaded. All of these aspects are suited to movie work where the gunfire was real and captured on a soundstage or during a stunt.

That being said....its a frikin Neumann and I'm sure it sounds simply great.

But it is by no means an inferior version of another mic model. Neumann just doesnt build things like that.

TLM series arent built as budget mics, simply different electronic designs than those LDC's with trannys.

RE-20 FTW.

For my voice, it is a winner. I also liked the 4050 and the V67, but I think the LDD is my mic of choice.

100% agree. My comment was kind of tongue in cheek. I believe the U89 has a smaller diaphragm than the U87, but they look very much alike.

It does sound pretty amazing and oh, so versatile.

I use Seventh Circle Neve and API clone preamps, sometimes my old Demeter tube pre.

I can hear my saliva jiggle!

u87 for "rock, rap"
u47 for country, folky or anything big and intimate
